What Has Happened to Our Beloved BBT?

02/08/2012 7:28 AM

Thought I'd have a check in on the 'BBT' and to my horror, it was gone! Not to be seen! Has ceased to exist! Eradicated! Does anybody know where our beloved 'BBT' monster thread gone? How is young Kris taking this?

Re: What Has Happened to Our Beloved BBT?

It has been closed and archived. (I had a chat with Kris about it to try to let him down gently.)

Here's a copy of the notice that was posted:

The CR4 team has decided that it's time to close the Bath Breaking Technique thread. Why?

  • Most of the posts are not on-topic for CR4.
  • A small group of CR4's users participates at this time.
  • Some of the posts violate (or come very close to violating) CR4's terms.

The closing of the thread doesn't mean that we don't want you to communicate. We'd just prefer that you share images, inside jokes, and everyday chatting via other methods:

  • Use your CR4 private mailbox (or your own email account) to share off-topic stuff.
  • Discuss on-topic, relevant information in the CR4 forums and blogs.

No particular event has triggered this action. The thread has obviously generated a lot of comments in the past 4+ years but it's just not really relevant for CR4.

The thread will remain open for a little while longer and then be closed and archived.

The fact that you purged the content from public view, shows a lack of respect for our community

That the community is held to a different [higher] standard than the "outside contractor" bloggers shows a lack of respect

It's of interest to a small group and a discussion about something that was closed. Pulling it off the main page is standard procedure in such cases.

If you had read some of my other posts you would know that the "outside contractor" bloggers are no longer a part of CR4's content. Those posts are not appearing any more effective February 1.

The point remains, someone is writing the non-community generated content, which does not always conform to the guidelines, used as justification for your actions...

We are doing our best to provide quality, timely, and appropriate content for CR4. This comes from many sources - GlobalSpec bloggers, partner bloggers, CR4 user bloggers, Engineering News, and the occasional other source.

With a team of more than one person it's never going to be 100% consistent. Every person has his/her own scale of what's good and what's not. Any user who finds something inappropriate can report it if he/she feels it necessary.

Re: What Has Happened to Our Beloved BBT?

Classic diversion

1st it was we can't control the outside contractors

now, it's hard to be consistent

any decent marketing person would be able to see the value of a thread that is nearly unprecedented on the net

even the most staid forum [eng-tips] has a cafe area,

social is part of why any forum exists, community

Clearly the perceived value of CR$ is diminishing, judging by the prominence [ or lack] on the GS Home Page

it is infrequent that any member within this community suggests using GS resources to solve a problem

why is that?

The "Powers" have decided that the BBT has run its course and come to the end of its useful (for GS) life. It has been closed and "archived" (according to Savvy), but there doesn't seems to be any way of us plebs to even read it.

The OTT has also been closed.

RIP.

Could be fixed, just replace some tracks. Keep it in a museum though, for all to see what happens when friction and standing on the spot causes.

(Picture from CR4 archive)

Can't find the thread, was quiet interesting though.

Happy days, Ky.

Re: What Has Happened to Our Beloved BBT?

Ah, the Bath.

Yes, the sacred cow is gone.

There is a small but vocal minority who are quite upset at CR4 for this affront to our freedom of expression, this beatdown of our right to consume bandwidth to achieve a 'shiney', this playground bullying of the worst kind.

Talk amonst some of the vocal minority is that we (CR4 members) are the content, the entertainment; I can see that, but I also believe we are guests, and I try to act accordingly. I don't quite understand all the fuss. In a week all will be forgotten. I'm ahead of the curve, already over it.

That would be me

we are the show

would you really come here to read items recycled from other sources [no user generated content]?

would you really come here if you couldn't participate?

the social part is much of what makes it special, the interaction, the mentoring

try to recreate on FB or twitter?

it's interesting how little a marketing company understands about value

it is their goat rodeo

but respect is earned, not a right

1: Yup

2: Yep

3: Nope

4: Nope

5: 100% agree

6: Never happen

7: What value does (did) the BBT hold for GlobalSpec? While not a marketing company, I can see some value in keeping the members happy by providing interesting diversion; this encourages participation and interaction with the group. This interaction would be particularly important with new members. How many comments on the BBT were made by a nag (not-a-guru)?

8: Yup

9: Whose respect do you wish to earn?

I find it interesting that a newer member has not commented here yet. We are doing something that we chide people for; we are using an undefined acronym. BBT = Bath Breaking Technique.

Although never a participant, I'd occasionally go to BBT and check on the latest bit of banter. It was like being in a pub and listening in to a conversation at the other end of the bar. Some things were very funny, and other things made me go 'huh?'

I think, like in a pub, CR4 should have made a 'last call' announcement with a specific end date & time. (Of course, what harm would there have been to simply leave it going until 12/21/2012, when the world [and presumably CR4] is going to end anyway? )

As it would seem yet another thread Bath author and I were conversing on has been shut down under the 'drifting OT' new rule; here is the comment in answer to Kris I prepared but "you are not allowed to post" got in the way of.

It is however serendipitously very On Topic in this thread.

Or should I wait until the weekend?

Yes, probably should wait till Brit time if I want Kris or any other members to have a chance to read it and think about it.

Thread that should be Closed Alert Technique

02/10/2012 10:05 AM

the insistence that fun exchanges happen off line as policy is fine

the expectation of equal treatment is not unreasonable

certainly the company sanctioned content providers, should not be exceptions to the rules guidelines

the thread above is chock full of witty repartee & sexual innuendo, which were some of the "official" reasons for BBT being made an unthread

Well I was only going to lay out how the CL "keep in the bath' has been abrogated and hanging me out to dry over a 5 post deletion when my daughter was killed, verses cooking the stats then knocking off 30 k of "GS assets" would look in the media in terms of GS PR damage.

the posts about your daughter were the 1st noticeable breeches of agreed upon rules of engagement by the moderation crew [which should sign their work]

Re: What Has Happened to Our Beloved BBT?

Serendipity is the secret fuel running through the veins of CR4. I have made more friends and confidants here than in any other time of my life. Why should this conference room be any different to others.

In real time there is a war going on out there, not only fought with guns and we are split and divided by the same old tactic.

The creators of good ideas and the finest observers of new trends and technology on the web we could ever have, are being looked over, censored.

That is a shame but will not interrupt the absolute necessary education flowing in between the lines. I need that stuff, just like this next cuppa coming my way.

Storm in a tea cup, Ky.
