Design in Nature by Bejan et al.

02/13/2012 6:19 PM

Design in Nature analyzes persistent flow. From considerations of flow efficiency and scaling laws new theory known as the Constructal Law gives insights. For example, the dominance of African-American sprinters is explained by Prof. Bejan et al. as due to their higher center of gravity. Branched systems, from rivers to circulatory systems to roots, exist as persistent flow patterns because they are the most efficient transport paths.

I'm sure "Aferican-American sprinters" always just thought they could run faster.

Not so sure why you posted this?

White boys can't jump either. Remember the movie?

It looks like you're trying to sell a book. I don't think this is a new thing................at least as far as I'm concerned.

Doesn't everything, (even a river), strive for maximum efficiency with the least amount of work?

I think the "new" theory is correct. Nothing works harder than it has to, to achieve the goal.........................whether it's sprinting to the finish line, or a river seeking a harbor to empty into.

Some things/people are better than others at achieving those goals.

I know I would have to read the book but it seems that fractals and

codes are more elegant and don't claim to be the ducks nuts.

Good luck, Ky.

My own "personal jury" is still out on this. I suspect that the author has attached the new name "constructal law" to some other principles that are already known.

I didn't recognize any of the names of the enthusiastic blurb contributors and reviewers. The author has several other ridiculously high-priced books on the market. The very phrase "design in nature" is suspect, partly because it is a notion of the "intelligent design movement". A lot depends on whether Bejan is using the word "design" literally or figuratively.

I have a new theory. It's called Contractive Nebulance. It has to do with shrinkage of certain parts of the brain. I think it affects book reviewers, and some authors.

Maybe we should start a new thread called "let's make up a new science name".

Sorry wilmont.

I just thought that this new book (2012), written by a prominent professor of mechanical engineering, about flow design in natural phenomena, might be of interest to readers of the Mechanical Engineering section of CR4. Although "design" might suggest some "intelligent design" religious agenda, that's not true here.
