Yeah, there's an app for that.

Not an endorsement. A Google search will reveal MANY suppliers of this sort of thing.

The pet trackers do not work very well in a car. You will need a GPS tracker for the car your cat drives.

Implanted chip trackers are cheap at $22, maybe some tracking fees though.

Please use a veterinarian to implant the chip, they say, so you don't implant it in a blood vessel by mistake. Handy kit, though.

GPS trackers are on market for pets, but also getting smaller. Again, tracking fees may apply...!!!

Tracking stuff/pets/persons appears to be a growth industry, the smaller it gets...

Re: Pet Tracking Devices

Most implanted chips don't transmit - they have to be scanned. Generally, scans are carried out by vets, the police or a cat rehoming charity - if they catch the cat!

I lost a cat 4 years ago. He was chipped. He has not been found. If he was run over, shot because from a distance he looked like a fox (quite likely), given my a neighbour for his dogs to fight over (he was seen doing this with another neighbour's cat) or was taken by a local buzzard, I'll never know because the chip (size of a grain of rice) is lost.

If he was snatched by someone who took/sold him, there's a chance one day someone will scan him and if the chip still works, he'll be returned.

Excuse me while I blow my nose and wipe my eyes....damn, you'd think I'd be over him by now! Del! I need some feline huggles....

If cats were kept where they belong...on the Owners property like dogs are supposed to be...this would not be an issue.

Consider keeping it in the house or cat-run.

Sapper

Re: Pet Tracking Devices

I'm not sure how much Oz law is like UK law. In UK law, it is recognised that dogs have owners and cat have staff.

A dog owner can be prosecuted if their dog strays and causes damage, since it is recognised that as dogs can be trained, it is the owner's responsibility to give and enforce that training.

A cat's care giver can't be prosecuted since a cat can't be trained.

Since losing my cat, I have tried to keep my new cats indoors. They indeed spend most of their time in the house. However, they know "outside" exists and they want to go explore. Is it cruel to deny them that freedom?

Cats ... belong?
Oh puh lease.<slaps head with furry paw>

@ ER. Our Cat is chipped. In our local paper a cat was found wandering, it had come all the way from Dorset, prob got in a van or lorry. They traced the owners as he was chipped, and they rushed up to fetch him. Happy ending.
Big kitty hugs all round

Re: Pet Tracking Devices

I had visions of the cat in 1/8" square cross section, 3" long pieces....and fried in beef fat. Particularly as Del said he'd been found in the newspaper...

<going for a lie down to recover>

@ Del: I phone the chip company periodically to say I'm still looking and check I've not missed a letter from them. Last time I phoned, the lady said they'd recently returned a cat that had been missing for 4 years (same as Safi ) and I've heard of some being found after 7 years. I still hope.

Oooh! Kitty hugs. :o) Pretty much the best kind (Skwibble's is a close second*)

Give Sophie a hug and some string for me.

*Kris made me say that.

Cat are unique creatures and may be the extraterrestrials that we have been long searching for.

Another curious attribute of cats that supports that hypothesis is that they always assume the shape of any vessel you put them in.

I've never tried it myself, but, I hear that if you are going to drop a cat from a great height, it should be from above 5 stories high. The theory is, from that height, they quit trying to land on their feet, and are therefore better able to survive. Does that sound right to you?

Well, right probably isn't the right word, maybe correct?

Just kidding, I really do like cats. I just don't choose to be owned by one.

Er. obviously off topic.

Perpetual Motion Machine

03/16/2012 9:23 AM

Have you noticed that when you drop buttered toast that it always lands buttered side down on the floor?

If you drop a cat from above it always lands on its feet?

So, what happens when you butter the back of a cat then drop it?

The Buttered Cat Theory postulates that the cat will fall and just before it strikes the floor it will spin levitated above the floor.

Try these: http://www.keyringer.com/

They come in pairs, and any unit can make all the other units in range to beep and flash.

Of course, the problem may be getting within 300' of your wandering cat. I don't know what a cat will do when it's collar starts beeping.

Good luck training your cat to wear it's collar every time it wanders off.

Heaven help you if you have multiple units in your house.

The Original Cat Flasher meets your requirements but does not require a smartphone. It weighs 17 grams with it's battery (change every six months) and is worn like a tag. When cats get lost, they go to dark and subterranean places and the Cat Flasher watches for that. When it happens it sets off a bright S-O-S light. GPS units could be good for dogs, but they don't work for lost cats as the signals cannot go to or leave where cats go, such as under houses. The Cat Flasher is all there will ever be for lost cats.
