Yes, sulfuric acid is used in lead-acid batteries. These types of batteries are used in autos and electric forklifts.

To know if and how much acid to add you must first determine the specific gravity with a hydrometer. Did they do this first step?

I don't know if we have ever had to add acid to our forklift batteries here. We keep them filled with distilled water.

Once a battery has been first filled it should never need more acid. Are you sure their not adding distilled water?

"i heard they are lead-acid battery's....

So what part of "lead-ACID" is unclear here?

Most likely what you witnessed was the initial charging of the batteries. Sulphuric Acid is added, then distilled water to make the correct Specific Gravity, then it is charged.

Was going to reply in the same line...

Acid is only added for the first charge when the batteries are shipped dry to preserve their shelf / storage life, also easier safer shipping.

After that point, only every need to add Distilled Water.

Sapper

For each kind of battery(Lead/Acid,Nickel/Cadmium,Lithium/ion,MH etc) a chemical is needed to conduct electricity from one plate(electrode) to another and the selection depends on the materials used for plates.
