Perplex With My 3512B Catipilar Diesel Generator

06/09/2012 2:24 PM

I got a 1000KW, 1605 amps diesel generator that have an issue with come up to speed and maintain desire frequency. When I start it up with all alignment in place, it would come up to 57 HZ and roughly 1534 rpm. If try to raise on the governor, it wouldn't go farther, but the frequency would go down slowly. Anyone has experiences this before, and what did you have to do to fix the problem?

Try dropping the RPM....Do you know the recommended speed, you might check that....Probably 1500

Thanks for the reply Solar. When dropping the speed, the frequency go up, but it wouldn't go past 57HZ.

Speed and frequency are the same thing. The hz should go up and down along with the RPM. What kind of governor does it have? EG3P, EG10P or 3161

Is your generator a 60Hz? if so I may assume it is 1800 rpm speed.. check your governer and see in what mode it is running, is it running in isochronous, droop or based on output power? state do you run your generator as a standalone or in parallel with other generators? I would say check out your governor setpoint settings and see in what mode it is running first.. if everything is set the way it is suppose to be, then you may need to bring the vendor or someone to fix it for you..
Did you see if the output voltage is ok as well?
Good luck..

Thanks for the reply B. The generator is 60HZ and its running speed is 1800 rpm. We had the generator in isochronous and it was running alone; just your normal start up. The output voltage was 450 as require. When you say, check the set point, do you have anything that would show how to go about it?

Was there any work done on the engine governor? If the spline shaft was not set properly, the governor may go full travel and not move the throttle to the right position. This needs to be verified as it may have been interfered with before your intervention.

Blocked fuel filter?

Bad fuel pump?

Bad fuel?

Water in fuel/water catch filter?

Andy's GA makes sense; also, it might be that the generator is overloaded.

One of the solutions to this problem may be found by making a telephone call to the original equipment manufacturer.
