Shape of Electromagnet Core

08/28/2012 11:26 PM

Is this shape of core for electromagnet weaken or strengthen the magmatic field .Kindly suggest best shape of core for electromagnet of opposite poles to get best repulsion from permanent magnet.thanks.

Is this for the "urgent (not a school project), or a new non-project?

I like the shape you have drawn. It will hold the unknown number of turns of wire nicely.

It looks like a bobbin. Bobbin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Well done!

I should have marked this OT.

its not school project i already finished it and running electrice generator of 1.5 kv with that.

during project i got idea to use such shape of core but it gives reverse results so i want to check my concepts only.

The shape is good; the flanges should be of nonmagnetic material.

dear my question is what effect on magnetic field if all of it is a core matrial. Is it decrease field or increase. area of contact increase also increase field. but i made a electromagnet with such core shape but it decrease filed specially repulsive arrangment with permanent magnet.

Try it, and find out.

It really does depend on what you intend to do with this magnet. If you intend to use this magnet for lifting scrap steel then this will not be your best shape. If this magnet is for broadcasting electromagnetic signals then this is a good shape.

it is for pull and repel the n50 magnet.

Are you rotating this magnet? What about this

Then why didn't you draw the diagram vertically?

Perhaps you made an iron or steel solid core, bad if you are working with AC current: the induced field in core will try to oppose it in same magnitude.

it is working with 12 vdc 2 amperes construction of coil is such that it create poles at opposite sides of core

To really get a handle on the effect of core shape number of wire turns, etc. you might want to explore something like the Open Source program, FEMM.

My understanding is that you want to repel a permanent magnet situated at the end of the electromagnet. The flanges should not be of core material (magnetic) because the flux will be diverted more around the sides, weakening the field at the ends.

Cut out a few shapes from a thin sheet of steel and get some paper, iron fillings and a small magnet or coil and observe what the field lines do when the shape of the magnetic material changes. That is the best way to really get a feel for what is essentially invisible.

You will find that the suggestions for cores with non-magnetic flanges are the best bet, but you will also see why.

That shape will spread the field, weakening the pull or push.

every commercial electro- magnet i've seen built had a round core that was surrounded by circular windings and inserted in a circular, heavy duty super structure.

any shape other than circular would have polarity problems, and would be self-defeating.
