Vehicle Window Won't Go Down.

10/26/2012 1:57 PM

Is this considered a safety issue? and if so should the company fix it for free? This is a power window.

I seriously doubt that this would be considered a safety issue. The windows of a DeLorean cannot open without breaking the glass. (Not the safest car on the road but it does make my point.) Now depending on the age, mileage and warranty of the vehicle the manufacturer may still be obligated to fix this.

it is a safety issue and need to be solved ASAP. because in emergency or accidents windows are a great help to rescue.

if your car has a warranty then it will be fixed without any inconvienance.

if no, then insurrance company is the other option .

if you dont want to utilize your policy for such a small fault then help yourself by locating the window fuse box in the dashboard and follow the steps. that will help.

If under warranty, yes.

If not under warranty, or the subject of a recall or service bulletin, no, probably not

Window won't go down is not quite as bad as window won't go back up.

Can you hear the motor running when the selector/actuator is pressed?

No and No... But hey, why aren't you in touch with your insurance company instead of CR 4? They make the reality.

driver or passenger side? do you still give hand signals as your vehicle as no indicators?

AS for escape route if the vehicle turn over, the chances are the window(s) will shatter once the vehicle has landed on its roof... problem solved!!

If not working and you are still covered by the vendor for , breakdown, failures, parts etc.. take it back , jump up and down in the showroom, throw your rattle out of the pram and generally be a pain in the butt.. until someone fixes it!! I did it.. works a treat!!

In Virginia, if is is supposed to go down and it doesn't, it won't pass a proper safety inspection. It probably is a safety issue under certain circumstances. From my own experience, cops don't like it so much when they pull you over and you open the door to talk to them.

Maintaining Safety Equipment after the warranty period is the owner's responsibility. Brakes, tires, vehicle lights, horn, seat belts, air bags, etc. are all safety equipment items that have a limited warranty.

If the ability for a window to go down was a really big safety concern, there would be a manual override. After all, in vehicle accidents which damage the battery, the electrical system is lost and the windows cannot go down, doors cannot be automatically unlocked, etc.

After an accident, the jaws of life and other emergency tools will quickly open a window or door. Getting a window to open and close at a marginal expense is the goal here.

I would imagine it depends on how old the car is as to who fixes it.

Bet the original brochure didn't use this as a selling feature, "Two days after the warranty expires" etc.

I bought a used VW Polo where my window would not open; On taking the door card off I saw that the previous owner had removed the motor and ALL the, what we in the UK call the "gubbins"all that was left was the window jammed closed with a piece of timber. It was trying to take the ticket from a parking garage when it really made itself a pain.

Best of luck with it.

ps, first post so please be gentle.

The first step in fixing a car window that won't roll down is to check its fuse. The fuse box for your car should be located under the dashboard. Once you have located the fuse box, use your owner's manual to locate the fuse for the window. You can use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull out the fuse. If the fuse if blown, replace it. After replacing the fuse, test your car window to see if it will roll down. If not, continue to the next step.
If the car window still won't roll down, you may have a motor issue. To test for a motor issue, leave the driver's door of your car open and crank the ignition. Once the car has started, try rolling down the window. If the dome light in the car dims when you try to roll down the window, you have a motor issue. A car window's motor should be serviced by a skilled mechanic.
Some vehicles are equipped with a reset switch to fix car windows that won't roll down. In order to access the reset switch, you need to disassemble the door panel. Although the reset switch varies by make and model of the car, it should be very easy to find once you have taken the door panel apart. For most cars, you will need a screwdriver to do so. Once you have hit the reset switch, test out your window prior to replacing the door panel.

Fixing a car window that won't roll down can be tricky. Most repairs to fix a car window that won't roll down will take the skill of a technician or mechanic trained to perform them.

Thanks for all the help. I'm in a position where I can't afford to take it to a garage. Right now, it' just an inconvenience, but I can see where it would be a safety issue, like sinking in water and can't open the door or window.
