What are manifolds used for?

05/22/2007 2:54 AM

Hi

I know that manifolds either divide or combine the streams for different purposes; but I want a neat description of manifolds to put into my presentation, I don't exactly know what other functions they might be used for!

please help...

thank you

Simply put, a way of combining multiple inputs and outputs. Keep it simple!

depending on your audience

  • A pipe or chamber having multiple apertures for making connections.
  • A pipe or chamber used to link many openings.

Open the bonnet of your car. there is a manifold to distribute the intake (air and petrol) to the different cylinders points of use. Then there is a inverse manifold to combine the exhaust gas into a single exhaust silencer system.

Not exactly true for all vehicles.

You may name any one of the two inverse.

The two main words distribute and combine could be used in any type of application.

manifold
Function:noun

1 : a mathematical set
2 : a topological space in which every point has a neighborhood that is homeomorphic to the interior of a sphere in euclidean space of the same number of dimensions

Woah! What military specification did you find that in? I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you. I work with a lot of military specifications and procedures that take something simple like the definitons above and turn into and engineering encrypted form of the word that most have to read twice to understand when they could have kept it simple. Haha, makes good sleeping material though!

When the word is used as a noun, you find it as a mathematical concept in Merriam-Websters Unabridged Dictionary. I've run into this definition before while perusing multi-dimensional physics.

Like Heart Cooks Brain said....keep it simple. Some people can take the simple to heights so high, that it does little good for so few.

It is simple and very brief. Without asking Heita, how do you know that this wasn't the type of manifold he was asking about.

Hey Vermin,

1 : a mathematical set

2 : Five: the set of all possible sets with five members.

Then what's the five smallest numbers not included in the set of five?

OK, I'll have to defer to you on this one...

Any five numbers (things, including intersections of other sets), no matter how small are still a set of five and belong within the "five set."

Go ahead and lower the hammer on me.

Hey vermin nice to see that you got a new friend there .

I don't understand, what five sets?

Well my quote on this:

"manifold (′man·ə′fōld)

(engineering) The branch pipe arrangement which connects the valve parts of a multicylinder engine to a single carburetor or to a muffler.

(mathematics) A topological space which is locally euclidean; there are four types: topological, piecewise linear, differentiable, and complex, depending on whether the local coordinate systems are obtained from continuous, piecewise linear, differentiable, or complex analytic functions of those in euclidean space; intuitively, a surface."

From "manifold." McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc., 2003. Answers.com 24 May. 2007. http://www.answers.com/topic/manifold-3

Vermin,

The ticks in my neighborhood aren't nervous at all. The buggers just go ahead and bite. They have no shame.

Sure Vermin, I'll serve it to you in a manifold (chilled of course).

Oh, and shaken. not stirred.

If the Borrelia find their way out the other end I do suggest you flee at once.

Otherwise you really may have a nervous tick.

Manifolds are used to muzzle sound produced by mechanical devices as well, connect various intake and exhaust ports.

Heita are you tallking about for example a manifold for different pumps connected in parallel and a common pipe connecting to it?

Please if you can send specific info...
