Under Voltage Problem at DG Sets

12/02/2012 12:34 PM

Our DG set(625 kva) is showing under voltage indication and very low power factor around .325 pf. Yesterday on increasing load, DG SET automatically got shutdown after showing low power factor. Could you guys tell me that how can I trace fault?

Find the troubleshooting guide in the owner's manual and follow the steps there.

Don't have one? Download it from the website of the manufacturer.

When none of this helps, call in a repair technician to fix it. Nothing lasts forever.

Please remove the load. Check voltage output from generator. If the voltage is in order then check the cables and load. If the voltage is not in order check the alternator.

If you are experiencing generator undervoltage trips you need to:

1. Measure the generator voltage level in unloaded and loaded conditions.

2. If the voltage is too low, adjust the generator excitation voltage to obtain the correct output voltage level.

3. If the generator output voltage level is correct then you need to adjust your under-voltage protective circuitry settings or replace the relay with a new properly configured unit that matches your generator operation.

4. If none of the above stops the issue, you may be exceeding the generator's output capacity and you will have to identify the root-cause. (Ground fault, shorted conductors, faulty equipment, etc.)

Oooooh! It's a good bet that 4 comes before 1, 2 and 3!

It has to be a short-circuit somewhere. For instance this could be a locked rotor[starting] pf. when the voltage is very low and an induction motor could not start and the protection does not working to shut down.

Your voltage regulator is faulty.

Normaly You must adjust the pf to 0.9 by raising or lowering generator voltage.

Look at the A-meter and adjust it to minimum by adjusting generator voltage.

Then You have the correct current running in the system.
