How To Transfer Photos from an iPhone to PC?

12/03/2012 9:35 AM

Hiya, I was wondering if anybody knows how to transfer digital pics en masse from an Apple 3GS cell phone to a PC?

My wife has about 900 pics on her cell phone that need to be saved. I can't figure out a way to transfer them via the USB cable to a PC or her laptop for preservation. Emailing them in small groupings is a Royal PIA!

Thanks in advance!

Most smart phones I've used can be connected via USB. The image files on the device are accessible from My Computer. Find the device on My Computer and click through until you find the folder holding the images. The name of the folder isn't usually intuitive.

Savvy has the right idea. An alternative if you're AFK (away from keyboard) is to go to your photo album, find "Edit", then select any pictures you'd like to transfer. From there you can create albums to share, or just email yourself all the highlighted pictures, or paste on Facebook, etc. etc.

Download the iTunes program from Apple. It will allow you to "Sync" your iPhone with your PC.

NOOOOO!

Do NOT use the iTunes app. Twice I have tried to use the iTunes app to sync my iPhone 4 to my PC and both times it wiped out everything stored on my phone with no warning. Once you hit the sync button, there is no way to stop it. Literally hundreds of photos and videos and dozens of phone and address contacts were wiped out. Bam. Gone.

Take the time to email everything to yourself, or set up a 'cloud' directory and store everything there.

Always read the directions when you get any new device or use a new software package for the first time. Itunes runs you through a bunch of set up menus when you connect a new device for the first time, read each one carefully! You can merge phone and computer, replace computer, or replace phone info when you connect with Itunes. If you set tie preferences to sync automatically, you will let Itunes do what you did last sync. If you set sync to manual(better choice) you can control the process. You can also sync over wifi, and have your phone sync whenever it is in range of your home network! Apple has a ton of FAQ and support info available, as well as all of it's manuals and instruction on line, even for very old products. If you told the device to sync automatically, you probably just transferred the photos to your computer(or where ever you told Itunes to store stuff) so you have it. All you have to do is resync the phone, and click"photos" from the menu and choose your photos. It will then put the one's you want back on the phone, magic.

Giving the advice to NOT use iTunes is 100% appropriate ... when given to someone who is NOT "schooled" in proper use of the program.

Many years ago, I became a "card-carrying-member" of the "I am NOT an iTunes fan" club. But ...

I recently took that treacherous plunge , and gave-up my Blackberry Bold 9700 in favor of the new iPhone5 (32GB). For SEVERAL DAYS, I beat my head against that proverbial wall, trying to get my favorite music (AND personalized ringtones!) that had been EASILY PLACED on my BB, onto my new iPhone. I was at my wit's end, ready to return the phone to BestBuy and try something else. [Yes, I went thru several "iterations" with iTunes, seeing things like:

T H E N . . . I finally made a call to Apple Tech Support. They absolutely, positively ASTONISHED me...! Granted, the first *5* people who tried to help me were not adept enough with BOTH iTunes AND (the 3rd-party app) RingToneMaker ... but the 4th fellow ("Ryan"), after doing all that he could do for me, scheduled a "Call-Back" for me for the noon-hour at my workdesk, and:

"Alec" called me at 12:02, and stayed on the line with me until 1:37, teaching me *everything* that I wanted (read: "NEEDED") to know.

Phys stated the perfect "Closing_Comment" (for THIS post), in Post #43 at the "Windows_8" thread......

Since CaptMoosie already had a workable solution in post #20, it wasn't worth arguing about whether iTunes would work or not. But you bring up a lot of good points. iTunes "pissed me off" for a good long time when I got my iTouch. I can do what I want/need to in it now, but it still isn't my favorite piece of software.

Something ain't right about taking pictures with a telephone.

How about giving Apple a call with it to ask them, or is that too simple?

You'd be surprised at how magnificent some of the pictures taken from an iphone can be.

As for calling Apple, most of the "geniuses" or "tech help" won't get you too far. Not for free, at least.

Can they be used to make telephone calls too? Is there an app for that?

PW, i agree with you on this. I rarely take pics with my cell phone.

I'd rather use my Fujifilm S-10 Digital SLR instead!

Okay, I have already tried the USB cable deal and my PC doesn't recognize that the iPhone is connected.

Surely you jest about emailing 900 pics? Her phone only allows 6 pics to be emailed at a time......I'll be here 'til Doomsday emailing them!

What is the name of that iPhone app to "syn"????

IF you can get through to the Apple Tech's that would be a route, but I'm not about to sit here "on hold" for eons!

When the iphone is plugged in, the computer should treat it like a removeable storage unit. Have you checked "My Computer" to see if it becomes listed there post-plugging it in?

Re: How to transfer photos from a Iphone to PC?

CaptMoosie, I have the itunes installed on my pc. I am running windows vista and when I got the phone, which I love and am now an iphone convert, I think I went online to the apple site where I signed up for the cloud thingy. Whatever it was I did I ended up with Itunes icon on my desktop. now when I plug my phone into the computer the itunes comes up and another window allowing me to import pictures from the phone. I am sorry I dont remember step by step but if you go to apple support they should be able to help in a heartbeat.

Best regards,

Shawn

I don't have an iphone but for my andriod I had to download a driver from Samsung to my pc for it to recognize my phone. Now when plugged into a USB port, my pc see's my phone as a USB storage device. Not sure if Apple makes it that simple or not.

After Googling "pc to iphone", I see there are alot of 3rd party programs for that purpose, try using one of those.

do a internet search for "apple 3gs phone memory card reader"

You could get the pics onto an SD card then, read that into the PC.

Unless I'm gravely mistaken, I don't believe any Apple product (save laptops / desktops) have the ports to take anything but a USB charge cable.

I fear you're gravely mistaken. Having said that, there's an old Irish story that has the punchline: "if I was going there Sir, I wouldn't start from here". By which I mean that the first mistake was getting an iphone. :-)

However, I'm with Moosie. I still have some pretty nice cameras I'd rather use.

I have retired my Minolta SLR though.

I'm with you lyn, I still use my ancient dinosaur 35mm SLR film cameras: 14 Nikons, 6 Pentex, and a lovely sexy Konica. Even on of my Nikons is an ex-NASA Apollo mission backup camera (never flew). When you attach motordrives to the Nikons they're incredible!!!!

I just am an oldtime shutter bug and won't part with my collection of oldies and goodies....they work, and there's no need to toss them out!

I would recommend dropbox. You can set up a free dropbox account, upload all your files to dropbox, then download them to your PC. You also get some free cloud storage/backup when you do this.

If you have a friend with a Mac/apple computer, you could use their computer to download all the files from the phone, put them on a flash drive, then plug that device into your PC, and download them from there.

Apple and PC's do not play well together.

I have to second this response. Dropbox works well between my droid, my PC(s) and my family's Apple and Windows devices.

Just keep in mind that, at least with my droid phone, if I take a picture with the phone it is automatically included in the dropbox folder and shared with everyone who has access. I haven't attempted to stop that as yet, but then I haven't taken any photos I'm ashamed of either (yet).

Using iTunes you don't have to Sync the phone and the PC in order to get the pictures off.

You can just mount the phone and use it like an externally connected drive.

Make sure that automatic Synchronization is turned off in iTunes before you connect the phone.

It's not easy plug-n-play...you have to learn a little about iTunes before you proceed...but it is worthwhile if you have an hour to spare. Your pictures are worth it I'm sure.

I do this all of the time with smartphones, iPods, etc. on a Windows computer.

Zune and Windows phones work the same exact way.

The cloud is another valid option, as others have pointed out. Getting to a Mac cloud from a PC can be a challenge for some just as well.

Directly connecting your devices alleviates the security concerns with Cloud management as well.

Okay, success finally!

When I tried my Corel PhotoShop Pro it migrated the pics from my wife's iPhone to my PC. For some dumb reason MS XP would not do it through the Control Panel!

Go figure!!!

I want to thank everyone that contributed suggestions on how to go about this! Have a great day folks!!!

In order for a Windows PC to recognise an iPhone, iPod or iPad you need to install iTunes. This will install the required USB drivers that will then allow your Apple device to communicate with your PC.

There is no need for iTunes after that. Whenever you plug your phone into the USB port after installing the drivers it should be recognised in the same way any other USB memory device is recognised. However, you will only have access to your photo library. Now you can just drag and drop all the pictures onto your PC as you would with any other device.

At least this is the way it works for me using the iPhone 4. I would imagine it to be exactly the same with the iPhone 3GS.

Preservation is not on a hard drive.

Burn them to at least two CDs or DVDs and keep the two copies in different locations, out of any light, in the original case. Top of CDs and DVDs is more easily scratched than the bottom, total data loss can still happen if badly treated. Use only best quality disks.....

When updating, do not throw the old CDs away, keep at least the latest three versions......grandfather, father and son we called it in the computer business....

Re-writables can be good, but DO make a full erase before re-using. Quick erase is not good enough for many reasons....this problem affects DVDs quicker than CDs.

You should be able to go to "My Computer" (as long as your idevice is attached via the supplied USB cable) and find your device under attached devices, open that and you should find a folder or folders which is your pictures (often called "Apple 100" or the like).
I hope this is helpful.
P.S. from there you will be able to move them anywhere you like but be aware that removing them from that folder also removes them from your device or camera roll.

Have you installed the USB Software for your device?

Does your phone need to be connected before switch on? Some USB devices get "noticed" better in this way I have found....

Yes, the USB software is installed on both deices. And no, I don't need to turn on the iPhone for the PC to recognize it in My Computer.

For some odd reason the PC cannot capture the pics, ie migrate them from the i-Phone through My Computer. I was only able to capture them via Corel PhotoShop Pro and several other graphics platforms.

I haven't tried to migrate the pics to my newer recently built PC. I try not to hook up anything to that machine, including the Net. It is a business only machine....hence stand alone.

You can try to transfer photos from iPhone to PC in 4 different ways:

1. transfer photos over USB cable

2. transfer photos from iPhone to PC over local area network

3. transfer photos over online cloud servers such as Dropbox, GoogleDrive and etc

4. transfer files over Wifi

if you have this iPhone app, all the above file transferring will be an easy thing: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ifile-pocket/id690442933?mt=8
