The Tin Of Mystery

12/03/2012 10:14 AM

During a clean-out project I found a tin can (American single meal canned vegetable size, +/- 16 ounces) with no label that makes a slushy sound when shook and floats about 1/2" of the can in tap water. What could be in the can?

Im pretty sure it isn't whupass, that usually being much denser.

Well, it won't be nuts and bolts.

KrisDel™ sells a very useful can contents detector instrument out of their catalogue for £249.99GBP - much cheaper than the LynDoor™ one, which has to be imported from the USA, of course <usual disclaimer>:

Well it could be some sort of chunky soup, but other than that we could only guess (unless you don't vary your eating habits that much and could narrow it down a bit).

It is very hard to tell because the buoyancy is effected not only by the food product in the can but also by the amount of water and gas content, both of which could have changed over the life of the food product.

Most likely. Where as opening the can will reveal its likely contents and satisfy our curiosity, selling it on eBay with a good writeup and back story will likely make you a few dollars. Some people will buy anything.

What happens when you roll it on the countertop? Try several different cans of the same size whose contents you DO know and observe the results. Also watch how the can behaves whilst it's rolling and how it comes to the end of travel. Build yourself a stimpmeter first so you can accurately replicate the experiment.

Stimpmeter? No use here.

Too much random interaction from the still solid parts of the dead cat inside. Depending on how the bones align, the roll will be affected. Also, if the can is indeed tin (Sn) it will have a soldered seam which will also influence the roll, or rather the stop.

I'd advise waiting until the vernal, or autumnal, equinox and trying to stand the can on edge and balance it, much like you can a raw egg during this time.

It won't tell you what's inside, unless it is a canned raw egg. Send us a picture if it does stand on edge.

I'm going with the cat.

Do you know what a P-38 is? And I don't mean the airplane.

Used to carry one everywhere I went, on my keychain.

That was back in the days when I take off across the desert, by myself for days.

Too old for that any more.

From that sound it can only really be either baked beans with a hint of chilli, or peach slices in syrup. No contest.

After fifty years, ptomaine, botulinum, clostridium, ... If it was peaches, or chili, who can now tell? Perhaps it is crude oil.
