Excuse My Typos

01/18/2013 2:19 PM

Jan 19 is an anniversary date for me.last year I woke up in neuro ICU. I had required brain surgery to repair a blood vessel that had suddenly burst in my brain behind my right eye and above my right ear. my surgeon had removed a large clot that had formed at my bleed site. the bleeding and subsequent clot had triggered a massive stroke. my list of deficits was long. after spending almost 8 months (mostly on my back) I was released last Aug.

in a week or so I'll be going to a hospital for 2 months or more that specializes in brain injury and rehabilitation.

the quality of my posts the past several months has been weak, bordering on embarrassing at times. brain damage doesn't just go away so I've been relearning many common tasks we all usually don't think twice about( I still have elastic shoe laces, can't tie the regular ones). my typing is still unacceptably poor because the left side of my body was paralyzed. most of my typing is done with my right index finger.

I've survived 3 brain surgeries and an emergency tracheotomy I had while in in the ICU. my gains are impressive to most people but my personality type demands more (sound familiar?)

so please bear with my posts which have fallen below my personal standards. sometimes my brain mixes up the "a" and the "s" and makes for some whopper typos that I don't see even after proofreading.

I'm not sure if I'll have net access while I'm away. I'll miss all the fun here while my focus shifts to intense rehab. so me and my bent sense of humor shall return, bank on it. until then hold the fort

Keep the faith brother....I think your posts are up to par, the amount of negative feedback here will overwhelm any below par posts, and I don't think you've had any...That comment the other day from some newb was out of line... This name calling is sometimes experienced from new posters until they get the message, we don't play that....I hope it didn't upset you....in any case hang in there and good luck with your rehabilitation....

Happy - very happy - anniversary to you. You've done fine with your posts; no need to apologize. Glad to know you are doing well on your road to recovery.

While reading your post I had a 'there, but for the grace of god, go I' feeling. About 10 years ago during a routine physical my doctor suspected I had a damaged carotid artery in my neck. He sent me to a neurologist who confirmed the damage. The neurologist put me on a 9 month routine of coumadin. Eventually an MRI confirmed the artery was fully healed and I could return to a 'normal' life.

If my primary care physician hadn't had a sharp eye I could easily have wound up in the situation you were in. It's nice, in a way, to know what I missed.

Hello Fredski:

No one here would have imagined that you had gone thru all that, due the quality of your posts.

I'm happy with my right index finger typing, never thought it could be considered a drawback , unless of course if you were as efficient as an assistant.

I hope they have internet there, it'd be cool that you posted a couple of pictures of a smoking nurse (well, not litterally smoking, you know).

I wish you the best.

Re: excuse my typos

01/18/2013 5:25 PM

Several years ago I was hit by a drunk driver and it took out about half of my brain and broke almost every bone in my body. The doctors told me at that time that I would never be able do do anything. My nurolgist later told me that I was at the third grade level instead of college level. He said that if I did not want to get worse that I needed to use my brain and that the best place to do that was on the internet because most news papers were written at third grade level and they would do me no good. I am not the same person I was before the accident but there are some advantages. It is much easier to find people that are smarter than me now and learn from them. CR4 has been one of the best places for me to learn. I have enjoyed your (bent sense of humor) as well as that of most of the other perple on CR4. Your life may not be the same as before, but it can be beter than it was before if you work at it. I hope to learn more from you agin soon. Best wishes Jim

Crikey! I'd no idea! Not one to pay typos much mind (my forte is dropping entire ), I'd no idea you'd suffered so much harm. Not much of a whinger, ay? :-)

We're all hoping for the best and have fingers crossed (I find prayer more effective, myself. Tried the intertwined digits bit but it didn't seem as effective).

Look, mate, if you come back and start posting queries about busbar sizing, we'll know things didn't work out but we promise to be very discrete about it and not mention the BB-word, k? :-)))

A bus bar should be sized to hold about 200 of those miniature bottles, so there is a decent variety on hand.

Truly, Fredski, anyone here who'd pounce on you or anyone else (my son, for example, who nearly died at age 4 from a massive brain hemmorhage) for making a few typos has got his/her own issues and voluntary ones at that - the worst kind.

If they do, send 'em my way.

Hi Fred, You are strong man to bear such surgeries. May God give you strength and vigor to fight the disease and come back to full recovery. It is better to share the problems with friends as you are lightened of the suffering and you get moral support.

Hi Fredski,

Typos, what typos, mine are usually far worse. get yourself back to where you were, use the rehab, I have a friend in rehab at this moment who is there 'caus he took a tumble down the stairs of a friend's house during the night, paraylis was the effect.

He has now moved his rehab to home where he has a wife and two carers and he puts in around 6 hours exercise a day, and thing are looking up.

Use the rehab to your advantage Fredski and we will soon be talking, arguing and discussing all sorts of stuff again.

All the best

Good Luck

Try to get your doctor to treat you with oxygen in hyperbolic chamber. It works wonders on stroke patients, you can also take one tablespoon three times a day of coconut oil as it is full of ketone's that are the elements that reconnect the neurons. There has been some great success stories with coconut oil on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Check out Dr. Mary Malone on you tube. Third there is a product called True Hope out of Alberta Canada that is a brain nutrient and I used it to greatly reduce my tinnitus ( buzzing in the ears) as it is a brain issue not a ear issue. None of these treatments has any negative aspects from my studies. Gook luck.

I don't think the shape has much to do with it. Of course you presumably meant hyperbaric chamber...

Fredski - For this issue, you're fortunate it was on the right side, since it is the left side that handles words.

Best of luck on your rehab!

I'd just like to add..........

Thanks for letting us know what's going on.

Like it or not, I feel a connection to the people on here..............even if I'm drunk and we end up in a stupid political battle.

I don't like my sister either, but I love her. We fight whenever we're in contact.

That goes for the rest of you regulars bums too.

Maybe it's just me, but it bugs me when someone just drops out of circulation.

You've got friends here Fredski; and we care.

Hi Fredski,

Good luck with your surgeries. I had a stoke in 2000, and because a specialist came into the hospital at the right time, my life was saved. Speech was a problem for a while. For a while there was a certain letter that I could not see. After that for a few weeks I could tell if a word was misspelled but could not fix it! I was once a champion speller. Now I appreciate spell checkers.

I hope people don't take this the wrong way.............and I certainly don't wish any bad..............

But part of me looks forward to the day that that Lyn starts misspelling words and asking stupid homework questions.

Sorry. Just being honest.

Karma's a bitch.

Recover well and at you own pace, Fred.

I am surprised at the number of head wounds among CR4ers, myself included.

Well, maybe surprised isn't the right word.

I look forward to your return to this asylum.

Good luck!

Fredski, sorry to hear this and wishing you the best with your surgery. Be happy that you're getting appropriate medical care.

You can count me among the brain injured at CR4. I still have a big conker on the back of my head from an assault in 2004, and a lot of physical symptoms still to deal with ever since. Not so lucky with the medical care as of yet (O Canada).

I find CR4 has been a great place for cognitive rehab, because if I make an error, it's normal practice that someone will point it out, and no one is (or should be) offended- we all make mistakes some time. You just don't get that critical feedback on many other sites. Not to mention the psychological benefit of focusing on somebody else's problem(s) for a bit. And, thank god, no shortage of humour to lighten it up.

When you're done with the medical rehab, I want to hear about it. Will it be better than a day at CR4? I'll be watching for your post.
