Thoughts on CR4 Forum Organization

01/28/2013 7:56 AM

The CR4 team is working on reorganizing the forum sections. The current setup is largely based on engineering disciplines. The new plan is to shift to an industry-based organization of topics.

I don't love the name "healthcare" and that will probably change, although the focus will be medical technologies and such. As CR4 is now part of IHS you will notice that we're trying to follow a similar taxonomy so it'll be easier to incorporate CR4 content onto other parts of IHS and vice versa sometime in the future (like this).

Notice that there will be an aerospace section! (Lots of requests for that one.)

So... I'm looking for feedback about this proposal. I know this is the right place to seek opinions. Is anything missing? A few other sections like Renewable Energy, Nanotechnology, and Natural Resources have also been proposed.

Note: There are no plans for other changes to CR4 in the immediate future. This plan is only to change the sections as well as a few cosmetic upgrades (new color scheme, new icons).

That would be listed under Blue Sky.

There needs to be a:

D: None of the Above category.

For things that don't fit no matter how hard you hit it.

That would be good- i.e. arranging based on industry. Recommend some general topics to ramain as it is.

Why limit to an either/or?

Surely the newly-named sections could be additional information - one extra box to tick for OP, one extra way to search for all.

And what about a 'fixed' tagging system, where there is an approved list of tags (with autofill?). Anyone wishing to use a new tag would have to request it from Admin.

So someone in mining wishing for information about a pump could select both "Metals & Mining" and "Electrical Engineering", and tag it with "pump", then it would be accessible to anyone using any of the three search methods.

Thank you for all of your comments. Looks like some users like the idea of an industry-based approach and others would prefer the status quo. Some suggested a combination of the two, which I also like, but could not be done right away based on the way the site was built.

If we were to stick to the current format (discipline-based), which sections would you like to see added, removed, or replaced?

I don't mind Electrical engineering, Electronics, and Instrumentation being combined, but I think software should be separate. BioMech & Biomed is much better than Heathcare. Instead of Aerospace & Defense, how about Aerospace & Astronomy? In short, I don't like the old or the new categories. I occasionally brows by category. How about a brainstorm activity?

Q: How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?

A: None, it's a hardware problem

While Re-Structuring the CR4, where the MEMBERS are joining, more and more, day by day, the STANDARD and the QUALITY NOT ONLY SHOULD BE MAINTAINED, BUT ALSO TO BE IMPROVED.

I would like to say that the INTERACTIONS REFERRED or CONTRIBUTIONS MADE by the MEMBERS should set an EXAMPLE SHOULD ADD STRENGTH TO CR4 and should be AUTHORITATIVE and REFERENCE SOURCE.

With all due respect to Mr. Shakespeare, "...ROSES and POLECATS, by any other NAME, have their own distinctive AROMAS..."

Likewise, changes--for "change" sake alone--are akin to the TITANIC'S band changing songs in an effort to stem the sinking.
