Seal Welding After U Stamped

I have an U-stamped pressure vessel in which there are 3/4" threaded nozzles for level gauges.

The nozzles need to be seal welded as per my client specification.

The problem is that my client is insisting that the seal welding performed by a firm who has R-Stamp.

As I see it the seal welding on small nozzles will not affect U-stamp validation

but I cannot find out suitable reference on ASME to convince my client.

Please advise.

I have encountered local jurisdictions in which the first field weld on any vessel nozzle must be performed by an an R-stamp entity. I don't think it is an ASME requirement.

It is an ASME requirement, if the vessel has to retain its ASME certifications. The reasons can very, and it doesn't matter, because that is what the customer knows.

I understand your shop is not certified to carry the 'R' stamp more less the 'U' stamp?

Just get the stamp. It's about $4600 to get, and $630 to renew each three years. Just pass the cost on to your customer, it's what you do to be a professional.

Thats a start,

You have missed getting your welders certified,,,, probably 6G certifications, not to mention a WPS or a quality plan, not to forget tracablbilty requirements, signing a contract for an authorized inspector, ect.......

Anyone who actually set-up a shop to be ASME certified, realizes there is more to it than just purchasing the books and stamps. :/

Any ATTEMPT TO UN-AUTHORISEDLY weld after certification is a VIOLATION, and attracts penal action.
