Happy Birthday!

05/01/2013 7:51 AM

The Internet turns 20 today.

Where were you May 1st, 1993 and when did you realize that your world was about to change?

Being a Ham that discussion took place pretty quickly as some of our community recognize the power that was unfolding before us, but for most we could only guess.

May 1st, 1993,

It was a Saturday, and I was working in the Ship Yard on the development of a Special Operations Craft for the Navy Seals.

Weather was Partly Cloudy, Temperature 73°F, Winds out of the South-Southwest at 13 MPH, It had rained the following day, I remember because I had go into work that weekend and to pick up bread on the way home.

Not sure where I was that day (I know I was at a horse show on May 9!).

I do remember getting AOL around that time period. It was a big deal! I still miss the dial-up modem sounds, sometimes...

Probably doing a little gentle maintenance at a favourite heritage railway.

The internet event passed without noticing it.

I was studying computational mathematics at the local U that year. One of my professors suggested using Kermit (remember this project?) for transferring and saving files on the U's VAX or IBM Mainframe (can't remember which). I got a copy of the software and a modem for my home computer. The rest is history.

I can't remember what I did last week.

I think I realized what was happening when I first got on line.

I chatted with someone in another country for free. I read some news in print for free. That was when it sank in.

Didn't notice, as I had been using DARPA net and our internal "ether net" for years before that!

brave sir robin,

You beat me to it.

Since then he has moved on to bigger and better things like creating a fictional investment scheme called "Selling Carbon Credits". It's like selling swamp land in Arizona, only more damaging to all of us.
