Load Sharing Between GTGs of Different Models

06/07/2013 12:31 AM

Hi all, I would like to seek for your advice. We have existing 4 units of GTGs (Rolls Royce KB7s= Site Rating of approximate 3.5MW) in our platform. The future projects with additional power requirement has necessitated the 5th GTG to be installed. I am considering Solar model (Centaur or Taurus) for this 5th GTG. May i know if there is any issue in terms of load sharing & shedding later on? What would be the consideration in making the selection? Appreciate your kind assistance. Thank you.

The response characteristics of the new unit may differ somewhat from the existing ones, but governor adjustments should be able to handle this. After all, a grid typically consists of several types of generators.

However, service procedures and parts inventory would be simpler if all units at one location are kept the same.

Dear Mr.Wei1984,

You can do it. Take CARE of the PROTECTION SYSTEM. Make the new Power source as the BASE LOAD and other existing to meet out the varying load/demand.

I agree with this answer based on the characteristics of the particular models cited. This is not always the case and the main thing to consider is the operating characteristics of each unit in parallel. I spent a large portion of my career in an area with a weak grid utility and many large manufacturing plants with enormous co-generation capability, many of them having grown with varied sized steam or gas turbines for generation. The biggest problem was the utility wanted to be master and really didn't have the capability, but we had to allow that to happen. With a tiny isolated system such as this the question is much simpler. If this was on a utility feed it would be small and never affect the utility but the utility would be the driving force that determined voltage and more important frequency. Load sharing is really fairly simple, but does require tuning of exciters and frequently paralleling equipment to detect circulating currents. Basically this was a simple question with an isolated system but the answer cannot be applied to a more complex system with utility connections. Those must be studied and carefully thought out when the generation is greater than the utility. That condition required use of paralleling equipment for the generators and exciters and the use of LTC (load tap changer) transformers.
