Power Factor Correction

07/09/2013 4:16 PM

A Main bulk substation having 132KV main power source from 132KV Utility Network and stepped down to 11KV for distribution to a plant loads, has been equipped with power factor correction equipment at 11KV system plant side.

In this case, power factor equipment is beneficial to Utilities or Plant? and why?

To the pocket of who's paying the bills.

As to why, try doing you're own homework.

Power factor correction is one of CR4's favourite topics. It has been covered countless times before. Enter "power factor correction" into "Search all of CR4" on the right of this screen, and click "go".

I presume that the 132/11kV transformer belongs to the plant. In that case installation of power factor compensation equipment at 11kV side will definitely improve utilisation of the transformer i.e. you can extract more KW out of the rated KVA of the 132/11kV transformer. Current carried by interconnecting cable ( between trafo and the 11kV switchboard) for the same KW of power handled will be less. Last but not least you may enjoy bonus ( or avoid penalty) on account of the improved power factor as per the tariff structure of the utility company as applicable in your area.

However, it is always advisable to install the compensation equipment as near the load as possible to get the advantage of improved power factor as explained above for all voltage levels across the plant.

If consumer side power factor is improved the power generation and transmission company will also be benefitted. More reactive power will lead to voltage drop in the system. If power factor is low the transmission & distribution loss will be more and conductor size required to handle the same power will increase. Hence they encourage consumers to improve power factor on load side.

Dear Friend,

First instant benifit is for the 11 KV side, AND over all benifit will be for 132 KV/GENERATOR SIDE WILL BE FELT.
