I Need a Low Fuel Alarm for My Wifes Riding Lawn Mower

07/17/2013 10:29 PM

Okay not normally a big deal (more of a rant) but every single time my wife mows with it she runs out of gas and it's pain ot to re prime the fuel pump and carburetor afterwards. That and she just leaves the lawn mower sit where ever it stalled at which is usually no where near the shop.

Anyway does anyone know of a simple sensor that would be able to read if a fuel tank had less than a inch of fuel in it but not false trigger while the fuel is sloshing around?

What I want is to have it turn on a 120 dB piezo alarm that points right at the driver and does not go of until either the fuel is topped off or the key is turned off.

Seriously. She has been mowing the yard for three summers and I figure she has ran out of gas 40 times by now.

Seems as if my last post did not make it ... so trying again.

As a past local government councillor, I tried to get GPS tracking with duty-of-care duress alarms fitted to the exec cars, service fleet and ride on mowers. The staff lobbied and so the opportunity was lost. (The insurance premium reductions would have paid for the installations and the fuel savings could have been a bonus for ratepayers).

Back to the lawnmower issue ... the GPS units can track dogs, people and your collector Mustang, then respond as needed. So if the mower was running low on fuel, then the alarm can call your smart phone. More importantly, the GPS with drive-by-wire might automatically bring it all home safely before the tank goes dry and you don't even need to strain the grey matter.

Now I need a metal detector for the mower.

I was cleaning up around the shop today knocking down some tall grass and weeds when I hit a large chink of steel that was originally part of the drawbar for one of our tractors. It was about 1.5" thick by 3.5" wide by 12" long with a offset S shape to it. (Been looking for it since around early last summer a year ago.)

Anyway I took out the whole spindle assy on one side of the deck when I tried to mulch it down.

Fortunately I have two spare spindle assy from a old deck ready to go just in case.

How important is it to balance the blade when sharpening? Can I get away with hanging it from a string? Mine is in sad shape.

<Shiny number!!!!>

Generally they are not too fussy about balance.

I just grind mine down with a angle grinder until they have a good edge again and call it close enough so yes the string method is plenty accurate enough.

A new solution just announced by NASA to get that @#$% mower home.

STEERING SPACECRAFT

A NASA technologist has developed a fully automated tool that gives mission planners a preliminary set of detailed directions for efficiently steering a spacecraft (which might look like a mower?) to hard-to-reach interplanetary destinations, such as Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and most comets and asteroids, (including the garage?)

The tool, the Evolutionary Mission Trajectory Generator, offers a "paradigm shift" from what is normally done, said Jacob Englander, a technologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., who devised a concept for his computer-based tool while a doctorate student at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Without any forethought or noodling, (or kissing behind the tree?), all mission developers need to do is input a series of parameters, such as the spacecraft's point of origin, its final destination and physical characteristics, as well as a range of launch dates and flight times.

I figure that if NASA can train monkeys to fly spacecraft I should be able to teach my wife how to operate and maintain a riding lawnmower.

Granted some three summers later I am starting to think the monkeys might have been easier to work with.

As you faced difficulty with lawn mower carburetor you might clean it. you may also divert to electric lawn mower. To clean your lawn mower carburetor this site could help you https://reviewerguides.com/how-to-clean-lawn-mower-carburetor/

It seems from other posts you can create rules and assign penalties for failing to follow the rules.

How about put the mower key on a carabiner and make a rule that the mower key lives attached to the fuel container and that the mower is to be filled at mowing completion (or before mowing) under penalty of refilling all fuel containers.

Probably more fool proof:. Make a place on the mower to carry a small reserve gas can. Mowers can usually be turned off when the engine sputters on low fuel, such that priming is not necessary upon refuel. Then make the rule that whoever necessitates priming has to go to town to refill fuel containers.

Does anyone think this issue has not been resolved in the past 7 years?

A spammer resurrected this from the grave, let's bury it again...

It's high time to put an end to this. My brother does just fine using this machine.

Hi Charlie,
See post #32 of many years ago!
Regards
Don

Possible solutions:

Get another wife
Get the handyman to check the fuel level each time he/she walks past the mower
Check the fuel level yourself (and complain) after every time the mower is used
Change mower to an energy saving push model
Buy grass eating cow
Take care, one or more of the above may see you lose ownership of the lawn.
I guess loss of the wife / handyperson / lawn will solve the issue.

A little barrel of gas on a necklace for the wife would be a treat.

Just tell her before hand..

...something on a necklace that took lots of pressure and millions of years to produce.

A simple way to avoid constant refueling issues is installing a low fuel sensor with a dedicated alarm. Float-type sensors are often reliable for small tanks because they only trigger when the fuel level is truly low, even if the liquid is sloshing. Some setups include a 120 dB piezo buzzer that stays on until refilled or the key is turned off, which seems exactly what’s needed here.

For installation help, local handyman services in Singapore can handle small electrical and mechanical tasks like this safely. Services such as PS Handyman Singapore can mount the sensor, connect the alarm, and ensure it’s positioned so the sound is clearly audible while mowing. This prevents repeated pump priming and keeps the mower ready for use without interruption.

Adding such a sensor not only saves time but also reduces wear on the carburetor from repeated dry starts. Combining this with a habit of topping off the tank after mowing provides a low-maintenance, long-term solution.
