I Need a Job

07/17/2013 11:27 PM

I have just graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in mechanical engineering, and I need a job badly. I have tried to go through online job sites as well as my college's career center with no luck. Any advice, contacts or help of any sort would be greatly appreciated.

Some details of your abilities and major accomplishments would help.

Why should anybody here help you?

You're an engineer. Define the problem and solve it.

This may seem like an odd question........ But did you happen to start looking for a job ,.... Say in February, graduation just does not happen suddenly.

Heres a few suggestions.....Try temp agencies, or search indeed.com.

But I'm going to prepare you......... Since you seem to be unprepared. The selection process can take a while from your first response. 4 weeks if your lucky.

Is your GPA making any prospects throw your resume into the circular file?

They look at how well you did in the technical courses, and not so much the humanity crap you had to take to make you well rounded. So the actual engineering classes will weigh in.

What are your personal interests that you've indicated on your resume.

Did you get any interviews via your college placement center?

If you interviewed, you MUST show a real interest in what they are designing, manufacturing. And the interviewer will assess you during this, with a binary "1" or "0". They can tell if you can make them money, or be a sink hole they never get anything back from.

Use employment agencies with a good CV/resumé.

Good luck.

You need an impressive (but honest) cover letter and resume in order for someone to consider you. This means no typos, a neat and well organized layout, and a clear explanation of your skills and experience.

Your cover letter should be customized for each position. Include company-specific details and explain why you are suited to that particular organization and situation.

Do you have work experience? You should be prepared to explain how it will relate to the job you're applying for, even if it's not in the same field. For example, if you worked in retail, you could explain how you learned about working with others as well as customer service.

There are many resources to help with resume and cover letter writing. The career center at your university may help recent graduates - check with them.

You should also start networking. That is the best way to build your own contacts. Join LinkedIn and be active in relevant groups. Add your resume to your profile and ask people to endorse you. Join a local engineering group and attend meetings. Many jobs aren't advertised but if you know the right person you could find a great position.
