A1) Either clear them out, or replace the trap.

A2) Whatever it says in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for that particular boiler.

Most all traps should have a strainer installed in-line and upstream from the trap so that all particulate materials are retained in the strainer and not passed through the trap and potentially clogging it. This is basic steam trap utilization.

What you should do is install a strainer, possibly a "Y" strainer on the supply line to the trap and near the trap. Install a drain valve on the separator screen port and open it as frequently as necessary to flush the accumulations out so they do not clog the separator screen. If you don't flush it the screen will clog up and reduce/stop steam flow through the adjacent trap.

Good Luck, Old Salt

If you have a high velocity steam flow past the edges of the strainer upstream of the (malfunctioning) steam trap (that should be replaced), perhaps it is steam containing corrosion products that is causing the aforementioned cutting.

The moisture separator of part of the internal design of the steam drum, and must not be tampered with by a novice. Consult an engineer at the company that manufactured the boiler about replacing the moisture separators.
