Phase

07/18/2013 1:52 PM

Why we are using 3-phase? Why can't we use 6-phase or 12-phase?

Because most licenced electricians can't count higher than three.

Phase wire colour coding would be a nightmare too, is that purple phase 6 or mauve phase 8?

We not only use 3 phase we use single phase and two phase also .Now you have to research yourself and tell all others what is the benefit of using three phase and not 6 or 12 phase if you are a qualified engineer. Take it as a challenge otherwise it is disgrace for you. Do read the link from utube.

Er, because wherever "we" are, there is only a maximum of three available.

["We" is undefined for the puposes of this response.]

My 1st thought was to kind of blow this question off like others. But, I will try to give an answer the best I can. Back when every thing was new and ideas where flowing about, with all these new things we were seeing in the world. Possibly we could have taken the direction you have questioned. But, those that were working on these systems were trying to find out how to even make something work from an idea with no blue print to go from. So they opted 1st for 2 wire DC. It work very well and you only needed the 2 wires. Then they wanted to transport longer distance and AC was chosen for the better properties it held for this purpose. Then as we gained more and more knowledge as to how things worked. It was determined that 3 phase power was the best of all possible ways to use and transport this new and powerful invention.

Hence here we are. But, it was a good thought.

Mr.Abraham I don't know much about this. I am just asking the questions which are asked in interviews. I can't answer like you have replied me. Please post your views. And the use of 3 phase is to transmit more percentage of power compared to single phase. The power transmitted in 3 phase is root 3 times the voltage multiplied by current whereas in single phase only the multiplication of voltage and current. That means with limited % of wire we can transmit more % of power.

In my point of view 3 phase is better to use. As I have searched many websites I could find that 3 phase 4 wire system is easy for long transmission of power whereas compared to 6-phase,12-phase.And most importantly, the transmission wire cost can be reduced in case of 3 phase. COST what makes the 6 phase and 12 phase less use. And coupling to the loads will be a big problem!

It is really good response. You have real interest in learning and that is sufficient to build up on your basic engineering qualification. Best of luck for a good future.

Thank you for your encouragement. Your words boosted me up. I am yet to learn a lot about Electrical Engineering.I have finished my Engineering, but I didn't learned much in depth about Electrical subjects. But now I am very much interested in learning about that. I think this website might help me to develop my knowledge and to learn some new ideas about electrical engineering.

You might consider applying for a job in a field for which you are qualified.

Having to type interview questions into an anonymous forum to get answers may impede your job search.

More simply put, it provides the benefits of a polyphase system with the least number of conductors and thereby the lowest installation costs.
