Looking to Share I&C Work Experience

07/26/2013 2:18 PM

I am a retired Instrumentation & Controls engineer and would like to share some of my work experience and reference materials. A lot has changed in this field since I started in 1975. I have seen the evolution of engineering in general, and more specifically, I&C engineering. I worked for EPC firms for 23 years and a manufacturing plant for 9 years. So I have both theoretical and hands-on experience. I do not profess to be an expert in anything, but I have spent considerable time doing: instrument/final control device/control system specifications, bid/construction packages, PLC programming/DCS configuration (design and implementation), checkout/startup, and facilitated many operator training sessions.

I have no agenda. I am just a retired guy who enjoyed working in the I&C arena and the technical challenges of the job. I miss the technical aspects but NONE of the political and management bs. I am not sure if this is the right forum. People may not be interested in what I may/may not have to offer.

It's the right place.

We've got: Instrumentation as one of the 15 sections of the site.

There's some bright guys here.

Hang around, it's good for a hoot.

Jump right in. You don't have to be qualified to have an opinion here.

Welcome, we can always use another experienced individual...we do try to mix it up with some humor now and then.....hope you don't have a thin skin, don't be afraid to speak up....What's interesting here is we address almost every aspect of engineering, it's a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and get advice on home projects....If you have any hobbies you can list them in your profile if you like.....

Hi Mike,

I teach Instrumentation at the 2-year college level (technicians, not engineers), and I'm always looking for seasoned advice to pass on to my students. Is there anything in particular you would like to say to my students as they prepare for careers as instrument technicians? Suggestions:

* Job-seeking advice

* Ways to pursue ongoing education while working

* What thing(s) they should concentrate on in school the most

* Advice for navigating the inevitable BS

Feel free to expand upon this list . . .

Welcome aboard to CR4!

- Tony Kuphaldt (Instrumentation and Control Technology @ Bellingham Technical College)

Welcome to the forum.

I hope your expectations are not too high, given the high percentage of homework questions posted here.

Although you might not consider yourself an expert, you'll have a frequent opportunity to answer the question, "What's the difference between a PLC and a DCS" at least once a month.

Iris,

I am not looking to do any homework. I actually was hoping to mentor a young I&C engineer.

Now a days, both platforms, PLC and DCS, are trying to become more like each other. I used primarily AB/Rockwell PLCs but they are in the infancy of selling their PAC system as a full featured DCS-like system.

I am at the other end of the scale to you, just come out of my time and making the change from apprentice to Instrument Tech on a gas site with a major Oil and Gas company.

I find Instrumentation very enjoyable, interesting, thought provoking it's good to have you guys here to answer newbie's questions like mine and others.

Although the homework type/laziness type do get a little boring.

Welcome.
