How Many Battery 12V 5 ah Needed To Convert to 48V 10ah Power Bank?

07/31/2013 7:22 AM

I like to power a motor 48V 500W which required acid lead rechargeable 48v 10ah battery

I like to purchase 12V 5ah Acid lead battery to power it

My question now:

1.How many battery and how I should connect it with parrell and serial combination connection?

2.How about charge it back once its fully discharge. What is the requirement for the charger is it as 12V 5 ah or have to purchase 48V 10ah charger?

Thanks

This is not as simple as you might initially think.

Your motor wants 500 (W) ~ 48 (V) x 10 (A)

A total of 8 batteries rated 12 (V) and 5 (A-hr) in a series/parallel connection "could" work.

If you have the time, you can charge the parallel battery groups with a 12 (V) charger.
This will require careful attention so all batteries are properly charged.

It will be easier to use a charger designed to charge the entire bank at the same time.
In either case, a "smart" charger is critical to maximize battery performance and life.

A 10 (A-hr) battery WILL supply ~ 1 (A) for 10 (hr), but under fast discharge it will be less.
I suggest you assume ~ 5 (A) for 1 (hr), or 50% of actual rating for a 1 (hr) discharge time.

Assuming SLA (sealed lead acid) batteries, do NOT discharge these batteries too quickly or too deeply.
Permanent damage can result. Read manufacturers specifications and charge/discharge limits carefully.

* What is the actual motor load? (continuous high/low load, variable, etc.)
* Is this a stationary or vehicle application? (battery mass may be important)
* How many hours a day will you need to run the motor?
* How many hours can you wait for the battery bank to recharge?

If application is stationary, I would start the design with 16 batteries rated 12 (V) and 5 (A-hr).

Good luck with your project.

After working with Li-ion batteries i have gotten rid of all of the SLA. Yes they have their quirks but it all comes down to a proper charger.

56 batteries

Generally a 12v 5AH battery will only maintain a .75 amp draw.

500/48 = 10.41 Amps

10.41/.75 = 13.888

14*4 = 56

Now that you have ganged all those batteries up.

14*5Ah = 70 AH

Rule of thumb in industrial batteries is 6 hr charge time.

70/6= 11.66 amps

A 10 amp charge should do. charge complete in 7 hrs

"56 batteries

Those must be some awful low quality batteries you are using. I have a bunch of 6 and 12 volt deep cycle UPS batteries in the 5 - 6 Ah range that can knock out over 100+ amps while maintaining at least 11.6 volts or higher and can maintain that load for over a minute without problems.

absurd analysis, 8 batteries will be practically identical, use the 48 V charger. Build 2 parallel strings of 4 bats in series (the batteries you suggested)

Personally, I would use 1 string of (4) 12 V 10 amp batteries in series.

The current draw is the recommended. Taken from the specs of a few manufactures.

Sure you usually can get a higher amp draw then recommended out of most batteries. Doing so could also damage the battery. Also we are not given any particular manufacture or model. Each maybe manufactured a little differently. Though the volume of the electrolyte is generally the same. The surface area can change in how they sponge the lead. Which intern changes the current capabilities of the tack welds. Over amp them they start falling apart.

1 Total 8.--- 2 Parallel strings of 4 each on Series

2 You should go for 48v 10ah Charger

Several of the answers were right on the money, plus they were short and sweet as they say.

8 batteries.

Eight (8) each 12 V 5 ah batteries

Two (2) groups of four (4)batteries connected in series = 48 V and the two(2) groups connected in parrallel. 5ah x 2 = 10 ah.

It is best to use a 48V charger.

It is possible to use a 12V charger if correctly connected to one battery at a time however it is not efficient, is very time consuming, and can be a safety risk.

This one of those questions that (will eventually) demonstrate the massive differences between theory and practice.....

A REALLY great tip is to use 4 x 10 amp plus batteries in parallel, not the 5 amp ones....

Do always remember that the weakest cell, in the weakest battery will get damaged first. Then after that the next, then the next etc etc.....the OP will be eventually driven mad.

The trick is to have batteries that supply at least 50% more power than required and to use as few batteries as possible, that would equate to 4 x 15 amp batteries. Place a charger across each that will only charge to around 13.2 - 13.4 volts, before cutting off. Leave the chargers in place running as often as possible.

It will last for ever, not gas, nor lose water. Optimal.
