I've been going through a little transformation lately, after getting tired of paying large monthly bills for services that I wasn't using enough to justify the expense, and I thought I'd share what I did.
1) Got rid of cellphones. I know most people can't imagine this, but we kept them in case of emergencies, and after 4 years without an emergency, it seemed like a waste of money. In a pinch, I'll borrow someone else's phone.
2) Got rid of cable. I am now only paying for internet. I switched to ATT Uverse, which gives me 12Mb download speeds and 250 Gb of data per month for $34. That rate lasts for a year, and if they try to burn me, I will switch to the cable company for a one year rate.
I picked up a converter box and antenna for over the air programming, and get all of the networks, local programming, along with about 15 other channels...all free.
In addition to the over the air stuff, I got streaming video and Netflix for $8 a month. It's pretty awesome, since I've seen very few movies and almost no TV series, in years. It's all commercial free.
3) Lost the phone company for my landline. I went to StraightTalk wireless from Walmart. I kept my same number, it has call waiting, caller ID, unlimited local and long distance, and it's $15 per month.
My new monthly total:
Internet $34
Phone $15
Netflix $8
Total $57
It beats the hell out of $120+. The one mistake I made, is that when I switched my phone, (I had both phone and internet through ATT DSL), they cut off everything, which meant no internet or email for over 2 weeks.
