Selective breeding has been going on for generations of our farmers............

Now, what usually took generation to improve a herd can basically be done in one generation with Embryo Transplants.....

But your may be surprised what Selective breeding can do.

I don't recall which bred of draft horses, but one of the breeds actually started out as a pony........ and thanks to the some monks they breed in some nice quality's.

Now they just need to do selective breeding so when I want a rear quarter, I only get porterhouse steaks.

These cows do look very yummy, and I bet the tenderloin is bigger too.

Here's a story that happened to me......

I was with my girl friend and we were going boating with one of her girlfriend (I'll call Cheri) and her boyfriend.

We drove past a place that had must have been at least 15-18 pig roasters all in a row. And Cheri asked what are those things,

And I said Pig Roaster,

she looked confuse and said What?

I said Pig Roasters, she still looked confused

so I said, Pig Roasters, you know oink, oink.

She looked horrified and again said huh?....

So of course I went on to explain to her how a pig gets butchered and prepped for roasting.......

My girlfriend hit me, and reminded me that Cheri is a vegetarian

Well, I then went on to Cheri with the acceptable amount of Animal protein is permitted by the FDA at the canning factories.

Cheri was a little slow, her response was again, Huh?

Explained to her, Animal Protein you know, frog legs, insects, caterpillars

for which I received even a harder punch by my girlfriend and telling me to shut up ....... I would have took her more serious if she didn't do it while laughing.

Then Cheri's boyfriend chimed in..... well you can always live on air......

I had to add, That's right, take a deep breath, but not too deep, we're coming to the paper mills.

You can have a lot of fun making fun of this subject. Like the job description and explaining your job on a first date with a girl.

I owned and operated a dairy farm, I also administered my own artificial insemination to my herd. Producing milk is far more than just the reproduction process, but it does have a great effect on the production of both beef and or milk.

Smaller to medium sized producers are more likely to experiment with their production numbers than the huge producers that buy their replacement cattle from them. Various heifer producers who also double as milk producers and they closely monitor the different cow familys and their production numbers.

As a beef animal I far prefer a Holstein dairy cow to almost any other beef animal if treated right, and slaughtered at the right time. And NOT the FEED LOT cattle that produce much of the beef sold at the super market.

Having operated a family dairy Ii agree.

Holstein can have the volume....... Their tests may not reach as high as a guernsey. But it can come close.

Also with the smaller herds...... The herd gets more personal attention, with herd health.

The breeding has selected for an absence of functional growth inhibitor.

.

I wonder about the ramifications....

.

More tumors?

.

Is it actually more efficient to grow more meat on one cow this way?

Please explain Quote; "The breeding has selected for an absence of functional growth inhibitor."

This makes no sense to me!

In both the Peidmontese and Belgian Blue breeds of 'double muscled' cattle, the genotype that has ultimately been selected for (probably not intentionally initially) is one with a mutation that results in the absence of any functional amount of a specific muscle inhibiting growth differentiation factor, known as myostatin.

.

Myostatin suppresses differentiation and growth of muscle (via myogenesis).... so those animals lacking it become far more muscular quickly.

But it is a naturally occurring genetic process, and not artificially contrived by gene splicing or the like. Which I took, as what you meant. Thank You.

You are welcome.

.

Out of curiosity, would you be more concerned/wary of meat or milk from a cow with genes that had been artificially altered to create an absence of fuctional myostatin than from a cow that had been bread to create the very same genes?

How would a person know? The way we buy food stuffs today we are at the mercy of feed lots, massive slaughter houses and their laid off inspectors. I do prefer the days when I could just do it myself. I knew all about the critter, what it was fed to how it was handled. My cows actually answered to their names, would never run from you. Were never nervous or stressed. While they were housed in a barn most winter nights, they were out walking, laying down making milk and good flesh, and feeding in pastures 15+/- hours per day yearly average. That is how you produce good milk and good beef.

However if it were a phenominom that was found in a specific herd, there would have to be scientific experimentation and testing I would expect, such is why this subject even saw light.
