09/24/2013 2:36 AM

hai all,

Can anyone tell me that, is there any special cable to be used for connecting battery charger to the battery, our chager is 80A, charging to 200Ah battery-110V DC. can i use cu/xlpe 50sq.mm single core stranded cable.

Thanking you all

That sounds more than ample.

Thank you, but my question is regarding the type of cable, i refered some contractors are using some special cables, which is flexible and thin strands. any specific reason for this.

If the leads were going to be used frequently, and use involved a lot of flexing (as when connecting to a battery in a vehicle), then leads designed for this type of use (i.e. with many thin strands) would last longer before failure.

The current in a conductor is distributed across it's surface. therefore the welding type cable is more efficient for high current because there is much more surface area in the small strands. As another point the small strands meke the cable very flexible for large guages as well, so it is a double advantage. A pair of automobile jumper cables from welding cable will outperform ordinary jumper cables every time, and will match amp for amp and be longer as well. They are perfect for chargers.

Because at low voltages, current is distributed over cross-sectional area rather than on the surface. Stranding is of little or no significance in that respect, but of course is good for flexibility. But then the OP has not stated whether this is a stationary vs. moving set-up, so we don't know if extra expense is justified.

OK then by that logic, lets wait and see if OLD SALT gets an OT as well.

OP also stated voltage at 110V is this not high enough ?

No, because that may be a mere typo rather than a theory error.

The current in a conductor is distributed across its surface....

What frequency does this charger operate at? Is Litz wire really necessary?

I think 50 mm. wire might be overkill, (and add a lot of weight).

I use welding cable. It is highly flexible to handle the movement of plugging it in and out. The insulation is durable made to be dragged across the ground. In the years that I have used it it holds up well.

The term "cu-xlpe" does not identify the stranding. If you wanted to know about that, you should have asked, and also said whether the cable needs to move a lot.

#4 welding cable is the best to use. Extremely flexible due to many small strands of wire, can take the 80A, 100VDC with no problems and stays flexible on extremely cold days. Take some hog nose rings to hold the two individual cables together to each other or else anything you have available, wire ties, wire, electrical tape, etc.

These also work great for a pair of jumper cables with two "jumper cable" clamps on each end. It is flexible so it stores easily to a small diameter coil where it won't take up as much space, can take the current, doesn't stiffen up in cold weather and is bigger diameter wires than most commercial jumper cables at the auto parts stores. Most are #6 or #8 wire and only the most expensive have #4. Another plus for welding cable is that you can make them as long as you want. If you need more current simply go to a bigger diameter (lower gauge number).

I have had a #4 x 25' set for the past 30 years. Made up a #2 x 50' set for a neighbor for his semi tractors.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Hi, 50 sqmm is ok,put flexible single core cable & make sure length of the cable to be near to the battery to avoid voltage losses.

The comments above are mostly fine. Some of them are good!

But I want to point out:

When in doubt: Check the owners manual!

we don't have the battery charger.
