Perforated Stainless Steel Tubing

11/10/2013 4:17 PM

Am having trouble with a new project here in Australia, need to source 316 stainless steel perforated tubing for product prototypes, then later for production. Details are as follows perforation hole diameter 1.5 to 1.75 mm ( 0.06" to 0.075" dia ) pitch triangular 2.5 to 2.75 mm ( 0.09" to 0.1" ) Tube diameter between 25.4 and 27 mm ( 1" to 1.6" ) Luckily the tube lengths are short enough for easy shipping 210mm Hope someone is manufacturing this stuff and can help Mike Down ORA Systems

One thing to keep in mind, recommended hole size, should not be smaller than material thickness.

That does not compute.

We have no idea of the application.

Maybe it's just me?

Well, maybe I'm missing something. I don't see a material thickness.......

And my experience .... Or rule of thumb...... Any hole produced in material, the hole diameter shall not be less than material thickness.

My guess would be 1/16th to 1/8th inch wall.

I see no reason you can't put 1/32nd or even 1/64th inch holes in it.

But, hey, that's just me.

We're looking at 20 questions here.

Depends if they're punched or laser-cut versus drilled.

Our new friend is the Principal Designer for his company. Let's hope his only problem is sourcing and not specifying the process used to make holes.

That rule of thumb sounds odd.

Are you sure your thinking about hole diameter and not hole spacing? Hole spacing at least the same as the material thickness I can understand but minimum diameter...hmm not so sure.

Hi Phoenix You are correct I forgot the thickness, 1mm in fact, also I screwed up one of the diameters 1" to 1.6" should have been 1" to 1.06" duh! Oh well I am getting good info from my request despite these errors, so I thank you. Cheers Mike

Glad your getting results.

I would like to know your suppliers,.......... I know that in medical devices, you can put small micro holes in 1 to 1.5 MM thick material with micro holes, about 0.004" (sorry, I didn't do the conversion). But this is for small runs, and not so much for perforated but single holes.

I worked in the dairy industrial a while back, and I saw a perforated sheet with small holes, the person would not give me the supplier,..... (would have been great to drain whey from small cheese curd) my guess at the time was that it was laser.... (Newer tech at the time about 18 years ago)

I don't understand, This info is what I searched for just last night.

Unless you mean for draining whey, 14 Gauge (.07") 304 SS with 0.032" holes.... Don't need it now, but I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Once I get results I will gladly pass on the names to you, currently I have contacted two US companies, Ferguson Perforating and Perforated Tubes Inc. so hopefully I will get results from one or both of them. Laser holes are too small for this job Cheers Mike

Mike,

This company claims to ship worldwide:

http://www.fergusonperf.com/company-profile/

I recently saw an advert by them in an Australian Engineering Newsletter (electronic).

Check out these guys:

Have used them previously for laser drilling of tubes with 0.6mm holes.

a. Do you need seamless tubes or welded tubes.

b. Tube thickness

c. Will you accept drilled holes, by automatic machine.
