In Search Of The Perfect Vehicle....

11/20/2013 10:49 AM

With the variety of prime mover's in automobiles growing ever more vast, what is your ideal configuration.? Turbo diesel, electric, hybrid, electric with range extender, gasoline, natural gas, fuel cell, or some combination? It seems that an engine that provides power on demand from a variety of sources would fit the bill, but what about infrastructure.....With some developers claiming they have engines producing in excess of 2 hp per lb, in the prototype stage, the range anxiety of the electric vehicle seems destined to fall shortly....Is the electric vehicle with high efficient ICE range extender the next big thing??

This weekend my eight year old son told me he is going to build a car that can fly, go on water, under water and tunnel through the earth. This was an update to tell me he added flying as he's had this idea to design and build a car since his Cub Scout Pine wood Derby race last year.

I'm almost afraid to ask him too many questions about it for fear of diverting his imagination.

His drawing skills need to catch up with his imagination.

Start with the ideas ... a few more words with feeling ... and we'll try to join the dots with his inspiration/wish list.

An automatic self-drive pool vehicle that doesn't need a licenced driver or all the heartache and paraphernalia that comes with ownership.

Probably there are different criteria, depending on what you need it for and where you live. With only a few exceptions, I have always had diesel cars. Where I live now I can drive 180 miles from ocean to ocean East West and 15 miles North South.

I could do this with a golf cart or something similar, but the way everyone drives here, it is better to create some passive armor and safety around yourself. My diesel becomes 20 years old next year and seems to be ready for another 10 years. Only 220,000 km on the odometer.

It is a company car with a bond, meaning tax free diesel. I keep it this way. Its is also easier to maintain with minimal electronics and computers.

For me it is just to go from A to B and back. As long I can rely on the back part it is O.K. with me.

I too drive a diesel.

Just for comparison's sake how much per litre do you pay for your diesel?

Here you can pay anywhere between USD 0.95 and USD 1.26 per litre.

The low end is from a few wholesalers who you have to make an effort to get to and the high end is from the regular old, and abundant, conveniently located gas stations.

I tend to plan my routes so I pass the wholesalers and make a mental note of where newly discovered stumbled upon wholesalers are located.

Here at the pump regular diesel is $5.35 per gallon (3.78 liter)

Tax free is $4.10 for the same gallon. Only 4 gas stations, 2 have bonded diesel. On the Family islands the price is different. (about $1.00 to $1.7 more expensive)

A bit more on diesel prices on west coast Australia.

Diesel ranges up to $1.66 per litre Thursday - Sunday with a drop to
$1.56 Monday - Wednesday. It is driven by pay packet exposure.
Diesel is more expensive than unleaded petrol. Petrol on Tuesday $1.40 per litre.
And to complete the picture, LPG is under 80 cents per litre.
