Pneumatic Wheels

01/06/2014 7:04 AM

I am looking for a supplier of pneumatic wheels that could be used to make electric wheel chairs.

I have searched the internat to no avail.

The wheel should be 10 to 14 inches dia and 2 to 3 inch wide able to carry 150 lbs.

Anybody know of such a supplier?

Thanks.

Since you are probably working on the proto type…….. try this.

You'll have to do your own investigating....

And then when your receive the wheels, take down the maker, and contact them directly or use the supplier......

Did Grainger Industrial Supply and McMaster-Carr show up in your search? A wheelbarrow wheel might also be about this size.

Thanks for the reply Lyn but I am not looking for wheelbarrow wheels, these I can get everywhere.

I am looking for pneumatic wheels I can use on electric wheel chairs. I have been searching the internet but it seems you could not get the wheels either.

Thanks anyway.

A while back some furniture manufactures had project for handicap for sports such as KI.......

You may have to special Olympics to get a high performance equipment such as this.

I did a quick search for 'pneumatic tires for wheelchairs' and got these......

Johan...

Your descriptions are far from complete...

If you want wheels/tires specific to motorized wheelchairs, how about a wheelchair parts supplier?

wheelchairparts.net might be a place to start. Will they ship to you? Dunno. Will they have some wheels 10 to 14" in diameter and 2 to 3 inched wide? Almost certainly yes.

I would bet if you contact GoodYear or another tire manufacturer and ask them the question and or do they know of a supplier one or two phone calls will have your answer. Three max. I did this before the internet and found it faster than the internet. Three calls and any question answered, be sure to state that " I need your help " It works on the human Psyche.

I remember a company made a car which runs on compressed air. TATAs of India bought this technology- but nothing seems to have happened thereafter.Instead of using fossil fuel or electric - they wanted to use compressed air. I am sure you are looking for controlled compressed air to power wheels of a chair. Take this as concept - may be contact Jaguar UK- which has been purchased by TATAs- if not develop from scratch yourself.

Only ever had a range of 7.22 km ~ 12 years ago - & a shopping list of improvements which will get them to 150 km range. 'Air' was never an energy source, just a storage / transfer medium. And a bad one at that. None of those improvements ever been achieved (or at least announced.) Tata got took.

For an automobile compressed air as a driving source- was bad idea. As you say - it was not capable of going more than 7.5 Kms etc. But for a wheel chair - a small compressed air cylinder may not be a bad idea- and that is what the original post wished for!!!!

Do you have access to a set of 'Thomas Registry' books? They were god-sent prior to the internet and listed manufacturers for almost everything under the sun. I haven't had to use them since the 1980's and not sure if they are still in business.

I was lucky enough to set my eyes on a set of Tom Cat but they were all American companies.

Sounds like a dirt bike front wheel/tire from a small dirt bike (50 to 100 CC) would work.Heavy duty, spoke wheels, inflatable, durable, good sealed bearings and a choice of tread patterns.

Also, there is this site for all terrain wheel chair tires and wheels: Good luck!

Scooter wheels/tyres. These will be rugged and have hubs to accept sprockets/gears/brake disks/etc.

Re: Pneumatic Wheels

I saw an iBOT last summer while I was at the beach. It didn't seem to have any problem with sand. It also gave the rider some serious mobility. I was VERY impressed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBOT

Wikipedia says that they are no longer being manufactured. That's very disappointing because the owner of the one I saw took great advantage of the versatility.

If you want to get into outdoor wheelchairs, I suggest you contact the Dean Kamen, the creator of the iBOT. I'm sure he'll have some good suggestions and advice for dealing with the wheelchair market. In any case, I think it would be awesome if the iBOT manufacturing continued.
