Yup - done many like that. Always in the lamp drive power supply.

Good work and you have several years of viewing ahead. At 79 cents you could carry spares for the future lol. - Or be a hero and fix that screen for the blonde 2 doors down

A few years ago I picked up a pair of high end NEC LCD3000 monitors (~$3000 each new) for $100 due to a similar issue. Both had a blown capacitor on the standby power supply so they would not turn on any more.

15 minutes each and a pair of used capacitors and they have been good ever since!

The 32" Tv in the master bedroom and the 30" in the first bedroom came from similar circumstances. Both had cheap 15 minute fixes and were got for less than their shipping cost.

What does a $3k monitor look like? I don't know if I would go looking for non-functioning LCD's, but it's nice to know they can be so easily repaired, generally speaking....but then again for the price you pay you shouldn't have to be doing any repairs,, for at least 20 years...at least imo

They look like the ones you see in airports and other large public places where you can see their images clearly in well lit places from 100+ feet away and can run at those settings continuously for years at a time without component degradation.

If I turn my brightness all the way up I can probably get a suntan off them at arms length!

For computer monitor use I have them set at 60% which is still plenty bright compared to a normal HD LCD monitor.

OK, I have a Chimei CMV936A small PC flatscreen with a green LED power ON, but the image flashes on and then off in less than half a second. Power recycle comes up with the same outcome. I should take up your inspiration and have a look under the covers! Thankyou.

Sadly, there was a twin Chimei CMV936A in the collection until knocked over by a low flying cat and the screen broke. It (not the cat) was slipped into a skip bin before I had the chance to store for a rainy day. Maybe I could have swapped power supplies.

Re: Samsung LN46A650A1FXZA Repair Complete LCD 46"

Glad to hear you got it working again, really well done.

By the way, is that you or some super star in the last picture?

For anyone who is maybe not quite as good as you (myself for example), before buying a broken flat screen LCD TV, the easiest ones to repair are the LED lit LCD ones.

Not ANY of the other sorts of flat screen TVs around, including Plasma....

The older LCD ones have a long thin fluorescent tube around the screen edge, that either the high voltage unit burns out and/or the Tube itself. Some models are difficult to source a new part or to install it.....

In my VERY limited experience while helping a friend, I was not able to purchase either as a spare part from Samsung.

Possibly because the tubes are really easily broken in transport (very thin and often "screen shaped"), so many companies will only supply a complete new tested screen....which was far too expensive for my friend.....and there is still the possibility the HV unit needs to be repaired or replaced!!!

This also true of many older flat PC screen monitors.....

Good job!

http://lcdalternatives.com/ has kits of capacitors for quite a few different monitor/TVs.

I used their kit to replace all of the capacitors on the power supply board of a Samsung 24" monitor. The monitor repair was almost two years ago.

Also, bought two capacitors from them to fix a Hannspree TV. I would have replaced all of the capacitors, but lcdalternatives.com did not have a kit and I was too lazy to identify them all. So I just started with the capacitors with obvious damage and got lucky.

That's for the link Mike, I too have an 42" LCD sitting on the self, waiting for me to get motivated to fix it. It was given to me to see what I could do with it. After realizing the power supply had to be repaired I was thinking of scraping the gold rather taking the time to actually fixing it. Between CR4 and other projects, just haven't got around to it. But SolarEagle kinda poked the fire and I should run with it.

Thanks guys

Good job! Just a side note, for caps 100uf or less, an ESR Meter is a valuable tool to have.

OK, now that we have the attention of all veteran flat TV repairmen, anyone has a clue how a little... worm (yes, a genuine ~8mm worm) got INSIDE my 50' LG plasma screen? At first I thought it was a local burnout. But examining it more closely I discovered it had a... third dimension. It was a f*cking dead worm. But how did it get behind the glass? Isn't it supposed to be sealed? And can front glass be separated to get it out? Any clues? I'm out of warranty of course, but I don't even know if warranty applies against tekfreak insects. Will try to get a picture somehow. And hey, no smart*ss saying my plasma is running... windows! O.K.? S.M.

Found this....

..."Plasma display panels are constructed as a pair of glass panels spaced about 0.1 mm apart, with an excitable gas in the gap between the two sheets, It's like have millions of teeny tiny florescent lamps all packed together. see http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/plasma-display.htm for a better explanation then I could provide here. WARNING: There are high voltages present in Plasma sets, and they should only be serviced by trained technicians. Now, many sets have a protective glass sheet over the actual plasma display. "...

Ok got some pics. Looks that the intruder got behind the protective glass, but considering it's size there must be a BIG gap. The beast is FAT. But there should be some kind of barrier there to stop dust etc. Now I hope glass is not epoxied or something. And yes, if I have to open the set I will replace the PS caps.

And to get a perspective:

I'd use the b*gger for fishing bate if it were alive. S.M.

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to get some compressed air focused on it. Then you could at least push it back into the nearest crevice and it wouldn't be visible. You'd think if he could get in there, the straw for compressed air might be able to.

I'll have to open and see the specifics, but if the mfd put a protective glass there, he is not too confident about the inside panel mechanical properties. I'll do the surgery some time next week and I'll keep you all posted on the outcome. Funny as it's just a millionth of the surface, and my eye is always there, even though the set has a picture "from another planet" comparing to anything I've seen, including much more expensive sets. S.M.

From what I've managed to glean from what I've read, there should be some clamps holding the protective glass panel on, and evidently it may or may not have a secondary function as a filter of some sort.....but has no connection with the operation of the tv itself....

As they say . . . there's only one way to find out ! I've only tackled fluorescent back-lit LCD screens, but they all had a very thin sheet of gorilla glass sitting on the lcd panel. It is held in place with a sheet metal channel which also serves as the holder and reflector for the light tubes. On these, it would be impossible for a worm to get in. But I don't know about a plasma screen. Maybe an egg got in during manufacture and then hatched?
