230/7.5kV Transformer

02/23/2014 1:01 PM

Dear all, 230/7.5kV transformer with core grounded. Just want to confirm that; One end of Secondary winding of this transformer can be grounded with structure on which this transformer mounted? ?? Any safety hazard? Any Chance of shock to the person touching structure?

Energize everything and touch it. You'll have the answer soon enough.

It depends on the application and applicable electrical standards as to whether or not the output is to be grounded one side.

What is the application and what do the applicable standards have to say about it?

Every chance when you don't know what you are doing.

Mr Darwin must really get sick of looking up expectantly every time someone posts on here wanting to play with electrical equipment but having no clue what they're doing.

It will be dependent on how well the structure is actually earthed! An experienced /qualified electrician is needed /required to validate this condition!

If the core is grounded, then your transformer "structure" should be bonded...according to code.

The "structure" that the transformer is mounted on should be bonded to building steel. The building steel should be bonded/effectively grounded.

Usually the foundation grounding is considered as a "bonus" and it is not instead a grounding grid well built. The GPR, touch and step potential have to be calculated and compared with permissible. You have to know the maximum short-circuit current and the split factor in order to calculate the current flowing through the earth. See IEEE-80/2000-for instance.
