Post Insulators

03/15/2014 9:20 AM

Hi,

Are post insulators only used upto 33 kV level? Are post insulaors only used to support three phase conductors in three posts? Does it have anything to do with insulation levels - (eg. a surge arrester should have lower insulation levels than the transformer.) What will happen if post insulators are not used?

No they are used in the farm and cattle industry for electric fence insulators.

i think they can be used upto 1200 kV ac and 800 kV dc voltage levels.

Posts are not normally associated with electrical power transmission lines.

At the 26.3 kilopost level, one needs strong insulation.

But alas, none exists at that level of exposure.

In accordance with the standards IEC, ANSI, CSA and other certifications single-component series up to a length of 90 inches and voltage levels up to 1100 kV.

Is that an euphemism for the expression "thick skin"?

Van de Graaff generators producing several BEV sit atop post insulators. In theory there is no electrical limit. In practice the structural integrity and manufacturing methods for porcelain and glass would impose an upper limit.

"...BEV..."

.

?

'BeV' as in billion electron volts? I'd say GeV if I wanted to express 109 eV. Tomato/Potato. But eV are not a measure of voltage, but energy and several GeV is a very tiny fraction or a joule....so I'm thinking your original 'BEV' probably has some other meaning.

.

.

Also, just to play devil's advocate, there are some theoretical limitsI can think of....

The use of post insulators is sometimes limited by climatic conditions. In wet or damp weather, they can cause a lot of arcing.
