Low Cost Check Valve

05/07/2014 1:37 AM

I am looking for a low cost check valve to be used in 3/4" to 1.0" PVC water line.

Can any one suggest a low cost design or a readily available low cost valve?

Google "PVC check valves"; you are likely to find many vendors around the world.

In that case, you may just be out of luck. After all, valves do cost something to make.

The world really needs a good $5 cigar, too.

Knowing which country's dollars might help: USA? Canada? New Zealand? Australia? Zimbabwe?

In a global Engineering forum, that detail is significant.

Re: Low cost Check Valve

If you are unwilling to spend $5 then perhaps you have some scrap items around that you can fashion into a check valve.

.

A couple PVC reducer coupling used to join larger line down to the 3/4" or 1" you want to use, along with a short section of the larger diameter line, and a shpere that will hold up in the fluid you will be using that is slightly larger in diameter than the 3/4" or 1" smallend of the coupling; could be used to make a check valve.

.

If your ball has positive buoyant, then the direction it prevents flow needs to be installed as up. If the ball sinks, the direction flow is prevented needs to be installed as down. You probably need to add an obstruction for the ball towards the other end so that high volume flow in the correct direction does not cause the valve to close by reaching the other coupling. ....or use a spring, but that starts to get more complex and less likely to be reliable.

OK, LESS THAN 5$ ????

It costs more in postage to ship it, or even drive to the store to pick it up.

Your Starbucks coffee costs more than that.

You state "a" valve which implies one.

Now if you mean hundreds or thousands of pieces then the story is different, and the suppliers will be wholesale, and not retail.

Never buy for experimentation if possible......doing stuff for very little money is great fun!!! Even if you have the money available!!!

Pick up your toolbox and visit the local scrapyard.

Find one where Washing machines, washing-up machines and the like are scrapped.

Remove about 20 valves, or at least double the amount you need. Make sure with a finger/screwdriver make sure that they mechanically operate.

Some may need to be soaked in coffee machine cleaner or vinegar to remove calcium deposits in hard water areas....

Pay max $5 for all of them and leave.

Some might be defective for some reason, keep them for spares.

If you need a different voltage (generally speaking they will be mains operated), remove spool and wind a new one for lower/higher voltages.....but I would suggest that is cheaper to change the design to use mains voltage!!

Have fun!!

Okay, Andy, please educate me. What is a 'washing-up' machine? Is that a dish-washing machine?

.

BTW, the check valves we have over here are almost never 'mains operated'...

Nice. I like that, especially since more stuff gets washed than dishes. I think I'll start using that term, just to see how people react.

.

In my neck of the woods, we usually refer to a washing-up machine as the 'dishwasher', and the clothes washing machine as the 'washer' or 'washing machine'.

"Geschirrspüle" or "Geschirrspülmaschine" or "Geschirrwaschmaschine".

Translate them how you will......

Doesn't the second one translate roughly to 'sink-machine'? That is pretty amusing.

Re: Low Cost Check Valve

Not really but it is related as the meaning of -spül- in this instance to to do with the action of washing. A wave "spüls" over rocks for example, so the English word "washing" fits it better.....

A sink is a spüle as in the first example, but on its own not with other words as in my example (written together usually in German).

A spule is a bobbin.....don't mix them up....

Geschirr means Crockery, but for the machine, includes unsaid the cutlery too usually....

Washing up (by hand) is das Abwaschen.

I forgot to mention, letters with the umlaut like Ä, Ö and Ü are the exact English equivalent of AE, OE and UE, just in case anyone also wants to try pronouncing such words.....

I hope this helps.

Forget finding it on the internet. These are stock items in any plumbing supply/water pump shop here and they are cheap.

I can't get PVC check valves but I can get brass check valves and some PVC threaded adaptors here.

I'm guessing you are in South Asia somewhere (right?), so market should be similar to my locale.

Have you tried your local market place yet?

Thanks. Yes you are right. I checked the local market and everywhere found brass check valves but couldn't find PVC one. I need a PVC valve for my application.

Given that it took me all of 30 seconds to find this on google, I have to question how much effort you expended to look for yourself before posting.

It depends on the fluid and the pressure involved. I needed a check valve for dry gas at very low vent pressure. I wound up using a vertical piece of PVC pipe on top of a ping- pong ball. Very low cost, and it has operated flawlessly for many years. Because your fluid is water, you may consider using a foot valve from a pump.
