Converting Invoice Amount into Words.

06/19/2007 10:42 PM

I am using self developed spreadsheet template to generate sales invoice. This application now generates the invoice in a couple of key strokes. But crunching out the amount into words is yet manual. Many times it is even forgotten and the invoice does not reflect true amount in words.

I need to develop the algorithm and work it out myself. Can any one suggest how to go about the task.

This reminds me of the automated systems when you dial in to check your account balance in the bank. From the intonation of the voice, it seems the pronounciation of the entire amount consists of appended voice overs of each digit and suffix e.g.:

1 to 19 - one to nineteen

10 to 90 - ten to ninety

hundred

thousand

million

and so on.

plug this into an arrray....

so when you hear the voice reporting your balance its:

one -- hundred -- twenty -- three -- thousand --

I do realize this is purely brute force.... and would be delighted to find out a better way!

The problem becomes more difficult in French, as different numbers are used in France and Canada, for example. 70 in French French is soixante-dix. In Canadian French it is septante. 80 becomes soixante-vingt or huitante. 90 is soixante-vingt-dix or neufante, dependent on longitude.

Sort of brute force yes but it can be refined to an exact art.

My language however has other problems.

In stead of saying sixty four we say four and sixty.

Are there any different (from English) requirements in your language?

What do you use for 11 to 19?

Well, well

I typed "convert number to words" in Google and this hit was first on the list

http://www.ozgrid.com/VBA/ValueToWords.htm

It's a Visual Basic code (made by Microsoft) that does exactly what you want to do. I didn't take a look at the other hits though. You can do that yourself. Anyway, I've just given you a starting point. You can do the rest.

Good luck.

Thanks for the VB lead. It is exactly what I need. Search Engines are strange! May be I could not coin my search request the right way.

When you say Words, do you mean in alphabet or MS Word file?

If its MS Word, why not just do the whole thing in Excel? You can have calculation in one sheet and the actual invoice in another.

You don't need VB code to Link Excel data into Word. Look up link in help.
