Motion Sensing Switches

06/22/2007 5:16 AM

Is there any switch which senses motion and then acts.

Case : Consider a wrist watch. One such switch is put in its circuit in the watch. If the watch is stationary, the switch should continue to supply power. However if there is some movement of the arm where the watch is clad; the switch should disconnect or connect supply based on the way it is placed.

The switch should connect and disconnect based on the motion it detects.

Anybody knows such kind of manufacturers? Please advice

Yes, there are cheap tilt switches in most electronics catalogues..

(I think they are just a liittle blob of mercury sitting in a shallow depression (aren't we all sometimes?)..which has a central contact. Any movement causes it to move out of the depression making contact to an outer ring.

If you want a home made device a simple conductive pendulum dingling in a conductive loop will work any non vertical plane.

There are larger devices available in most home improvement outlets. Passive infra-red detectors are a basic component of many home security systems.

Yeah, but that trailing lead to your watch can be a bitch!

A little mercury switch (as used on an electric eraser) should do.

Why would you want to stop a watch when it moves? Or move a watch when it stops?

Long ago i had a self winding clockwork watch. The watch used to gain time (± 8min/hour) whenever I traveled on rough dirt roads. One of these switches would have been helpful.

I devised a use for a watch with a movement switch. It can be used on the arm of a security watch (guard). You need a watch with 2 units. one is normal and the other is switched of by movement. The difference in time reading will represent the active time. If the readings are the same the guard must be dead.

Sure, you can even set one out in your front yard. If someone walks to close to your house, you porch light comes on... any home improvement store.

(oh, and no mercury)
