Selection Criteria For New Roads On a Wind Farm

05/29/2014 12:50 PM

We are developing a internal road network for a wind farm in South Africa. Besides for the obvious issues of connecting the turbines, the gradients of the roads, avoiding river crossings (where possible) and avoiding environmental sensitive areas. What other selection criteria are there, lists or web links would be welcome.

Number one would be the hiring of a good Civil Engineer that knows the local codes etc.

This should be obvious to you.

This is not a South African forum.

national building regulations and building standards act

South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL)

In the US before you can build infrastructure we follow NEPA National Environmental Policy Act. Their are several guide line policies that can be looked up that goes step by step of environmental and cultural clearances. Might be a good place to start I sure that the EU and UN have similar policies.

If you specified Cow Dung on your Environmental Impact Assessment you must use it.

Please state the site . There may be a General Authorisation available for water course crossings (roads and transmission lines).

Drainage, combined tight vertical and horizontal curves, sudden transition from lee wind conditions on roads to strong windward (e. g, ridges), animals on roads in open range situation, those using the roads other than the wind farm folks

You might also consider the use of slightly hygroscopic salts to minimize dust disturbance from traffic on dirt roads in isolated areas, if indeed you include this as an option in your application papers to the environmental regulators in S.A.

I'm a South African architect. There have recently been forums here on soil compaction and clay road deterioration. With great respects to anonymous, I reckon the very first reply from 'Tom Consulting' got it right, and no further comment is necessary!
