Problem With Pneumatic Rotary Actuator

06/06/2014 11:35 PM

Furnace door of a top opening furnace weight 80 Kg is hanging from an arm connected to a hinge and can be rotated effortlessly by hand due to less friction . When I try to operate the rotation by pneumatic rotary actuator of 90' turning , it will move very fast , and will create problem in stopping such a heavy load apart from other dangers . Also by rotating at a lower speed in a controlled way much heavier load can be moved by a smaller actuator . i am using a rotary actuator where the cylinder is of 2 inch dia . and torque is 2.6 kg-meter at 4kg air pressure Please tell me how to control speed of the actuator at a much convenient lower speed of turning and if the actuator as described above can do this , assuming hinge is very smooth and the load is counter balanced .

You could place an air throttling valve on one or both actuator ports.

Your application of the flow valves is good. Placement is in question. For safety reason I would place them on the cylinder. Actually if the weight of the door in question is such that injury or damage would occur if the flow control fail it would consider reporting the cylinder.

Google "speed control valves" also called "flow control valves" They are available from all pneumatic component suppliers, in all standard port sizes. Also, check your actuator. Many have these built into the ports (there will be adjusting screws in the cylinder heads.

Speed control is achieved by restricting the flow of exhaust air out of the cylinder not the flow into the cylinder.

Also known as pneumatic snubber.

Cheap, simple, and field adjustable.

by using the flow regulator you can reduce the speed as desired but it acts as your friction fluctuation i suggest you to use the pneumatic actuator with hydraulic brake which can give you full force ,smooth movement and speed of your choice .

Mr.Mukkerji,

Some of my clients had installed our Chain Electric Hoist with lifting speed of 2.5 mt/min. But door was opening vertically. I do not know it may be feasible in your case.
