What do your class note say?? Over loaded or old age? Or just plain shorted out from broken down insulation??

Oh NO! She's say'n that you had that poor old motor running uphill for too long and it just fried itself!

Without being able to see it from here some possibilities are:

  • Overload set inappropriately high and motor overloaded mechanically
  • Short circuit in windings
  • Operated at too high a voltage
  • Not spinning due to failure of the start capacitor circuit
  • Mechanical damage to the winding with any number of possible causes
  • Cooling fan not spinning
  • Airflow to motor obstructed
  • Fire in the vicinity of the motor
  • Etc.

There are no unimportant reasons.

Good list but you forgot a very important one (at least!):-)

Voltage too low.

I saw as a young Engineer in the UK many of these types of motor fail (in card reader and punch equipment) due to incorrect patching of the mains transformers of then modern Univac computer systems from the USA. Output voltage should have been 220VAC and it was only 190VAC.....error in the install manual.....

Thr motors would run and seem fine but got extremely hot and failed in a few weeks.....New motor and patching correctly and then no more replacement motors......I think I replaced the fifth motor and my then manager wanted a permanent fix!! He got one!!!

I also rewrote the install manual on input transformers and their patching, it saved a lot of breakdowns in the 70's in London and around the capital....
