Top 10: Science Pop Songs

06/29/2007 1:52 PM

New Scientist is looking for the Top 10 Science Pop Songs. There's sooo many to choose from...but being a Police fan I guess I would pick Walking on the Moon - from their list of contenders. Please share your nominations and favorites!

AC/DC was it? damn. Nanny runs the creche, so I don't stand a chance.

Talking of St W's - did you hear Jeremy Hardy singing the words of Creep to the tune of There's no-one quite like Grandma? It was on this week's ISIHAC

Besides the many songs that were already meantioned in previous replies; I would nominate "Dirty Robot" by Arling & Cameron. Sadly, I wasn't able to find a link to the whole song.

What about Rush?

"The Spirit of Radio", "Chemistry", "2112", "The Twilight Zone", "Something for Nothing" (for all you perpetual motionists), "Cygnus X-1"

And so on - I think that Rush would be in the "Top 10 Science Bands"

Tom Sawyer is my fave Rush tune of all time. Simply awesome, especially for a live recording.

This is not a really science-y song, but it was inspired by a science experiment with rats - something about triggering the pleasure centers in their brains. Can't recall the details, but if you have good bass, this is a thumpin' good tune. (Even though it was used to hawk cell phones on TV.)

Hey 63,

Have you checked out "Pipe Dream" on the same site? I thought it was - well, awesome. The timing and programming seems that it would have to be quite complex. However, there may be a specialized program that facilitates this kind of thing. I'll bet Neil Peart would appreciate that one!

Pipe Dreams is the actual name of The Incredible Machine. My mistake.

Also check out Fiber Bundles by the same outfit.

Passages in Pogo Sticks sound inspired by The Who's Eminence Front.

Mr Roboto is an android (or cyborg) (my heart is human, my blood is boiling - my brain, IBM).

I nominate "Mr Roboto" for #1 Science pop song!!!

#2 Would be "Point of Know Return" (or "Just Beyond the Event Horizon" - my words ) by Kansas

Eureka!!

If you want to hear the Singing Scientists, look here: http://www.acme.com/jef/singing_science/

These songs may not be "Pop" in the larger sense, but those of us who heard them as children will always hold them in high regard. And sing them aloud at the slightest provocation.
