07/02/2014 5:23 AM

Hi,

What are the criteria to be kept in mind while selecting GRP Junction boxes and Stainless Steel Junction Boxes. Or what are the merrits and demerrits of these.

1) The desired ingress protection [IP] rating and the IP rating of the junction box before modification to make entries to receive cables.

2) The compatibility of the materials with the various fluids that may be present in the area.

3) The compatibility of the materials and contents with the temperatures likely to be encountered in the area.

4A) The compatibility with any hazardous area constrains placed upon it due to its location.

4B) The compatibility of the internal segregation between intrinsically safe circuits and those not fitting that description that may be found within it upon completion.

5) The compatibility with the number of cable entries to be made.

6) The compatibility with the numbers of terminations to be made.

7) The compatibility of the cable glands with any hazardous area constraints placed upon it due to its location.

8) The compatibility of the cable glands with the desired ingress protection rating of the completed installation.

9) The mounting arrangements for the box.

10) The risks of impact damage, either deliberate through, for example, someone using it as an improvised stepladder, or inadvertent such as being bumped by a fork-lift truck.

11) Its size and the ability to use tools inside it.

12) Etc.

They each have their own advantages and disadvantages, but generally they can both be used in most places.

Places you may want to use SS over GRP would be in the food and beverage industry, chemical industry, farming, etc or wherever harsh solvents, heavy wash-down or cleanliness to limit bacterial growth would be an issue.

What's the application exactly?

You should consult with the local codes and

NFPA 70 - New 2014 NFPA 70 Code Book - nfpa.org‎.

Since this is an intergalactic forum, location, location, location is important, important, important.

You could have left at least one consideration for the rest of us to submit.

Perfect.
