Practical Uses for That IR Thermometer You Bought

07/02/2014 7:34 PM

So, I got home from work today and discovered that I only had one cold beer in the fridge.

But, being resourceful, I did not panic.

I loaded a fresh beer onto each shelf and imbibed, secure in the fact that before long another cold brew would be sliding down the throat.

My wife has banned me from putting them in the freezer because I forget them and they explode.

So, after awhile, trusty IR instrument in hand, I checked each bottle and selected the coldest one.

Money well spent.

How do you use your IR thermometer?

To detect (by correlation) the angle of the dangle, which is proportional to the heat of the meat. My protractor is broke.

Well I pretty much check the temperature of everything, but there are 2 things people particularly seem to like, one is to point skyward and see if you can calculated the altitude according to the temperature reading(usually in the 30's), and another is the pavement temperature(sunny day around 135ºF), interior of the car, check oven range, refrigerator temp and freezer, water temperature, coffee temperature, food temperature, motor operating temp, condenser temp, line temperature, a good one is wall temp vs ceiling temp for insulation effectiveness.....the list goes on and on....

I just went outside and pointed mine up. 1°F. Gold truck fender in the sun 150°F.

White fender 140°F.

I think that's around 17k ft, must be a very clear sky....You could put a clear plastic bottle of contaminated water on your hood, and it would be safe to drink in a couple of hours or so....just so you'll know...

Yep, clear sky.

I'll pass on the contaminated water, thanks.

It's cooling off from 109°F. Down to 105 right now.

Sorry, no have! But could you use it to check your tank filling?

Me thinks that if the next beer is too warm then the tank might be almost full dependend on what was in the fridge before!

I'd prefer this method to your proposed tank checking method in the above referenced thread. Gag reflex.

BTW your solution there was exactly what I was about to propose until I saw you had already posted it.

Re: Practical Uses for That IR Thermometer You Bought

Being the good pal that she is, my dog walks me several times a day. After these she likes to take a sunbath, lying on the asphalt driveway. Summer or winter she wants her sunbath. To prevent her from getting too hot or what ever happens to dogs, I shoot the temp of the driveway. Have reached temps of 150 F to 170F on hot, clear, sunny days.

If it is too hot we go to the backyard and use the hammock in the shade. She gets in the hammock and I get to lie down on the ground if it isn't too wet. That way she won't get mad and not walk me.

Good Luck, Old Salt

To find the temperature at which my garage door opener looses it's little pea brain (96 deg f).

To double check the temperature on the heated bed of the 3D printer.

Spring and Fall, to check the ground temperature so I can gauge when and where to walk the dogs, without running across rattle snakes.

To prove to the wife that yes honey, the thermostat really is telling you the truth (that proof rarely works).

How does checking the ground temp keep you from running across rattle snakes?

Rattlesnakes don't have IR thermometers.

Re: Practical Uses for That IR Thermometer You Bought

They have a temperature "sweet spot" of 80-90 Deg F. During the winter they hibernate, and during the hottest months they aestivate.

There is no place where I live, and walk my dogs, that does not have rattlesnakes around. But some places are worse (much worse) than others. all of them around water sources, which makes sense, since their prey is usually found in those areas. I usually spot 1-2 in the Spring, and 1 in the Fall. About 5 years ago I had one dog that got nailed big time, the rattler got him 3 times in the space of a heartbeat. That year I saw 3 in the Spring and 2 in the fall. It was one of those cyclic events, 1 year a wet fall followed by a wet spring, then a year or 2 of small animal population boom, followed by - you guessed it - a snake population boom.

During those periods when they are most active, I take the dogs to the places that have the lowest probability. And I take my friends Sturm & Ruger along, loaded with 357 snake shot. Takes a bit of practice to figure out the spread pattern, and whether it would be safer to blast them, or throw the blasted thing at them!

Wow,

I grew up in Arkansas where we had tons of snakes.

Never much worried about them when I ran through the woods as a youth.

Uhh, what is UCHJCYAQFTJB?

Showing results for UCHI CYQ FTJB
No results found for UCHJCYAQFTJB

See I at least googled it!

Seriously, there are rattlesnakes pretty much everywhere in the U.S. Never thought much about it, until that day. I educated myself real fast after that incident. I had done a little research before then, but figured I needed to know a whole lot more.

Then you know the answer.

Bean from Arkansas I didn't lurn much speling.

It's Y.

Google told you this.

If you turn a rock over, turn it over toward you so the snake will go the other way, not at you.

I guess you can learn something new every day - if your lucky and look.

"Rattlesnakes don't have IR thermometers."

Pit vipers do. They always go for the warm beer.

How silly of me. Rattlesnakes are pit vipers. They do have IR thermometers, built in.

Which brings to mind a good run for walking in snake infested woods. Always take something warmer than you on the walks.

Kinda like walking in bear country. Always take someone with you that you can out-run.

Before putting your hand into an exhaust manifold system to check for leaks.. Also take tire temps, after burnouts, in TopFuel---Many, many other ways…I guess you could try it on a skin patch, and compare for sunburn--Other uses are X-rated….
