Weight of Cable

07/16/2014 2:02 AM

sir,

How can we calculate the cable weight/meter or yard

for example what will be the weight of one meter of 185 mm2x3.5 core non armoured cable.

please i need detail formula or calculation

thanks

Easy! Cut 10 cm of the cable and weigh it.

Take the weight and this times 10 is your weight per meter!

You forgot to mention the cable should not be powered when you cut it.

Given some of the questions asked here on CR4 I wouldn't guarantee this obvious common sense step would naturally be taken.

;)

I never try to think when answering those questions, but I think I thought that while the cable is installed already nobody out of his mind would actually go and try to find out the weight. Unless of course a smart head has seen the cable tray bending and had the bright idea to check the cable weight.

In which case me thinks I was not thinking what OP was thinking, leaving me with a headache now . . .

Thanks for nothing!

Consult the manufacturer's catalog.

Or, weight = volume x density.

Quick and dirty with big assumptions:-

Assume copper cable

Ignore weight of insulation

185 * 3.5 * 8.9 /1000 = kg/m

Add 20 to 50% for weight of insulation

Should really be used only as a sanity check - better to check with manufacturer as stated previously.

Calculate? Look it up in the cable manufacturer's sales literature! If it isn't there, get on the phone and ask!

"please i need detail formula or calculation"

Why, these figures are readily available.

The only individuals I can think of that might have a valid need to calculate the weight per unit length of a cable design would be people working at the cable manufacturing/design place. These individuals will have access to all of the relevant data and I would expect the training to produce a valid set of numbers. These numbers would be the average weight per unit, the maximum and minimum weight per unit, along with the critical standard deviation (σ, aka sigma) for proper quality control. Everyone else will refer to these calculations and maybe additionally measure purchased cable to assure that all of the cable meets the claimed quality control.

In other words, if you have to ask, you are not qualified.

IMO, you may follow the proceeding of IEC 60502-1[up to 1 kV rated] or IEC 60502-2 [from 6 to 30 kV rated], Annex A (normative) Fictitious calculation method for determination of protective coverings and take an average specific weight for copper 8.96 g/cm^3, 2.7 for aluminum, 7.8 for steel, 1 g/cm^3 for polyethylene and 1.4 for pvc.

Re: Weight of Cable

It's in the cable datasheet. Any formula or calculation offered here is going to be near worthless as you haven't specified what the voltage rating of the cable is and its application. For example high voltage cable insulation weighs more than low voltage cable insulation, heck you haven't even specified if it is copper or aluminium core!

Consult the datasheet. If you cannot find it then find an equivalent cable on the internet and consult its datasheet.

What type of cable are you working with? Coax with a insulator between the conductor and the mesh? There are different materials for the same type wire. Insulator separated open wire, looks like a ladder. What type and size of NM or other non-armored electrical wire. Quality standards for the fluctuations in size, diameter of conductors, type of insulation, etc. Are all conductors the same size or are they a combination of sizes. Does the wire have a messenger? Are there any line amplifiers in it (such as underwater telephone cables).

If there is a universal formula or calculation for determining the weight, by the time you find one and make the calculations you could have telephoned the manufacturer and gotten the information 20 times. There are some things in this world that are not just worth figuring out on your own. It was probably much easier for you to write this or any other written communications like this on a computer with a word processer software than to use the hunt-peck method on an electric typewriter.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Ask a re-cycling forum or a scrap dealer. They know! That stuff comes into their shop all the time, usually ripped off from corporate owner who just writes it off as the cost of doing business.

The manufacturer will have this information, for assessing shipping.

Pick up the phone, and ask.
