Regarding 88BT

08/14/2014 12:13 PM

In our GT, GE Fr 6FA machine, already one Turbine Compt Cooling fan -88BT-01 failed. Now 88BT-02 is in service. No standby. 88BT-01 is programmed to be repaired in next month. In the mean time , due to any fault, if 88BT-02 also failed, what will be the consequence?...whether the GT has to be shutdown immediately?, There is no trip protection available for this.... So what must be the operator's action in such case?

  • It should say in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
  • If it doesn't, then telephone the original equipment manufacturer and obtain a replacement.

If the cooling fan were not essential equipment, then it wouldn't have been duplicated. The conclusion must surely be obvious, even without a manual.

There's a reason for redundancy.

See #1 above.

If I was the operator and the only place I could get technical help was a public engineering forum I would ask my question anonymously, too. I would also get my resume ready.

That's when you go back to doing multiplication by adding the natural log of a series of numbers.

<going back to the naughty step>

I have no knowledge of this system BUT If your unit is providing mission critical power and there is no redundant unit. I would fix the fan ASAP. As far as trip protection there must be some type of alarm for this item. I'm also guessing that if the fan operation is not directly monitored the exhaust temp is in some way. Keep in mind that there may be a scenario where the unit may need both fans operating at the same time. So fan 2 is not actually a spare.

turbine enclosure temperature alarm surely exists on a GE frame 6!

What you are referring to is "secondary cooling air".

Your 88BT-02 is not a back-up fan. It is a complementary fan that is required in addition to 88BT-01 in order to maintain proper compartment temperature. The idea is to keep the turbine exterior from exceeding design operating temperature.

The operator's required action is to shut down the turbine until both fans can be operated.
