Know the geometry of the Exchanger Vessel and calculate accordingly.

Area = ∫∫x1x2dx1dx2, where x1 and x2 are generic orthogonal coordinates for the surface.

Another way to describe it is = ∫∫f(x,y)dxdy.

Is that for an existing heat exchange or are you sizing, if your sizing, it can get pretty involved.

You can get some pretty satisfactory software if your sizing for about $100.00 - $175.00 (U.S.) Not to mention your thermal and mechanical properties of the fluids you'll be using.

Liquid Sodium is a good fluid for some applications. Other applications one wants liquid Helium, but good luck trying to contain it.

If this is an existing vessel you can measure it.

The way to go is to get post-it-notes and start sticking them on the outside of the vessel. Count how many notes there are and deduct the wall thickness from the count number.

Add 5.7% for incorrect overlapping of the notes and deduct another 3.2% for the area where you could not stick a post-it-note to.

Or maybe the other way around.

Done this plenty of times before somebody figured how to ask the question correctly!

Beware this process is a trademark of Post-it and you should make sure you do your payments to them!

Dear Friend,

Your question is not clear.

What I understand " HOW TO ARRIVE AT THE AREA FOR HEAT EXCHANGER.?"

If this is in your mind, the answer is HEAT LOSS = HEAT GAINED i.e MASS FLOW x Temp.Diff of heating/cooling medium expressed as W x (T2-T1) = U x A x Delta T, where W = Mass Flow to be cooled/heated, (T2-T1) is the temp. Difference, U = Over-all Heat Transfer Co-Efficient, and DELTA T - Log Mean Temp., A is the (only unknown) AREA required for Heat Transfer.

2nd Point comes to my mind is to simply calculate the Surface area for for the tubes. If so, the size, length and no.of tubes are known, and you can easily calculate mathematically. Pl. take the mean diametre for the tubes. If it is hexagonal or square or rectangular tubes, take the mean height/width.
