Husqvarna E-Series 142 Keeps Dying Like the Chain Brake is Engaged

08/30/2014 5:25 PM

I can start the the saw and it seems to run for approximately 10-15 m ins then it sounds bogged down like the chain brake is engaged and if i keep gassing it up and down trying to get up to a cutting rpm it is work lol. but I always lose the battle within a few minutes of this happening and if I set it down and come back in 10-15 minutes I can do it again but the intervals of operation get shorter and shorter each time. Can someone possibly tell me what the problem and the solution are for this? Please and thank-you!

Engaging the chain brake will not kill a properly tuned saw.

Chain brakes should be tested every time you use the saw by running it full throttle then applying the chain brake.

A fuel tank vent that is restricted or plugged will starve the engine after running for awhile. What happens if you take the gas cap off then restart the saw?

It may be getting too much fuel, but it would be smoking, then.

It may also be overheating and losing power, but from your description I can't tell.

There is nothing better than a Husky, so take it to a shop.

It doesn't sound too serious and it also sounds like you can't fix it.

Thank-You for your time and info. I guess I will have to take it to the shop. I hate that lol I just put a new fuel filter and fuel line in two days ago.

If you did that to try to cure the problem, it was not wasted.

Sediment or other crud may find it's way into the fuel stream after running for awhile. Blow all the fuel lines out. Check the carb for dirt and debris, blow all the passages out.

If it were mine, I'd take it to the man. It's a great saw. My bro has three saws and I used to ride a 450cc six speed Husky motocross bike in my youth.

Check the chain oiler line. It may be clogged binding the chain and or bar sprocket

I like the ethanol damage explanation, myself.

Even Husky cautions against using it. (or leaving it in the tank)

Is the chain too tight? Do you have chain oil in the reservoir?

If you are skilled enough, when the filter was changed the rest of the fuel system must be cleaned. Empty and Methanol (wood alcohol) rinse the gas can it is probably dirty and has water. Change the filter again so you know it is clean for the test run. Empty the saw tank and also rinse it. Clean the fuel lines and any other parts of the fuel system. If easy, clean the carb. Put it all back together, fresh gas and oil in a cleaned container and clean the fuel tank cap. Put it all together and test run it. If it won't start in 5 minutes or still runs the way it did, take it to the man at the repair shop. If you are not skilled to do this, take it to the man at the saw shop! Good Luck, Old Salt

Check the chain lubricant and the fuel/2T oil mixture ratio.

WE have had this problem Also. It's a Carburation issue the Ethanol rots the gaskets seals and other non metal components. We use High Octane gas NO ETHANOL

I have a crew of 6 guys and at least once a week I remind them NO GAS with Ethanol. It helps. But so we are not with out saw or other 2 cycle machine. We keep spare carb kits on the shelf. No one will ever fess up that they put Ethanol fule in a machine.

The Carbs are made with rubber - plastic parts from china which are highly suceptable to damage and deterioration from Ethanol. Your problem is when engine gets warm the gaskets will loose seal & suck air, "O" rings on neeidle valves swell & leak or float becomes heavy from absorbing the Ethanol The Ethanol will melt some flue tanks . I live in FL Keys (Snow Bird) Some folks ( dispite warning signs on the pumps) were filling up at Gas stations with Ethanol gas rather than marinas. My neighbor ended up with 50 gallons of Gasoline in the bilge.

From Husky operator's manual:

IMPORTANT

Experience indicates that alcohol- -blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage.

Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage for 30days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next season. See STORAGE section for addi-tional information.

I think you've nailed the problem.

Internal combustion engine: Dad would say Fuel air and spark.

Heat might be affecting the spark, but unlikely.

Fuel, maybe, but new filter should have made things better and degradation of carb due to fuel woud have been a one way trip without returning to apparently OK.

Have you cleaned/replaced the air filter? It maybe obstructed with dust etc.

My Husky also gets "tight" when the drive sprocket is worn. Chain adjusted to worn zone, Hot chain gets a fraction longer and then climbs onto non-worn section of sprocket and gets tight, symptoms just like chain brake.

Once had bar tip sprocket filled with sappy chaff and that got tight.

Good luck.

I gave up on pump gas last year when all 5 of my Steil saws started to give me trouble. It cost me five carbs and two fuel filters and vent lines in one week that was enough for me I went out and bought 2 cases of Tru-fuel and have not had a problem since. The Ethanol plays havoc on the metal in the carbs as well as the plastic lines and filters no need to look for any other causes when a good saw just wont run, look at the fuel.

I would check the fuel tank vent valve and make sure it is free of obstruction and operating properly. (It is a check valve that allows air to enter the tank while preventing fuel from escaping the tank.)

The saw maintains fuel pressure by the use of a pulse tube between the fuel tank and the cylinder.

If the tank vent valve is restricted, a vacuum will be created inside the tank and fuel cannot get to or through the carb into the cylinder.

Usually the valve is located in the fuel tank cap.

Be careful that you do not destroy the valve when you remove it.

If you aren't comfortable with doing this, I would take it to a repair shop.
