Sometimes I'll go to Who's Online (to see who's online) and, while I'm there, almost always see particular older threads being read, usually by unregistered guests.
The two most popular older threads would at the moment seem to be:
First Telescope for an 11-Year Old, posted 09/24/2009 by English Rose
and
Incredible Technology: How Supercomputers Solve Giant Problems, posted July 27, 2013 in the Engineering News blog.
.
My question is actually two-part:
1) What are CR4's all-time most popular threads?
and
2) How to rank them fairly?
One method might be to rank them by rate-of-readership, ie, total-number-of-views/age, for threads older than a certain threshold. Older because recent, heavily-read threads will skew the results, but then, where to set the 'age' threshold? I don't think this is the best way to do it but I can't come up with a better one at the moment.
Are there better methods? You sage statisticians out there? What say ye?
It would be interesting (for me at least, but I'm sure for others here as well) to see which threads have attracted greater rates of readership in the long-term and what topics they address. I could see where this info might be generally useful when choosing one's blog topics, for example, and even more so if trends were charted. What sorts of threads are people finding to be the most interesting ones on this forum, are these interests changing over time and, if so, how? Given what people evidently like to read here, are we giving them more of what they like? I can see where this info could be useful as well as being simply fascinating.
