Use the one that is on your company computer.

Unless he is trying to "re-invent the wheel". I am sure that whatever the company is using now has been researched and chosen for a reason. Not saying that there may be something else out there, the same, worse, or better.

So you are burning gas to produce electricity? What do you think is the difference than to a coal power plant and why would there be a different set of software for the electrical part of the system?

Isnt it more at the liking and not liking of the engineer/company which software they use?

What do you know about power systems, distribution networks and assorted software being used or is yours a general question?

British Standard 7671 and BS EN 60079.

So, corporative greed is now the directive criteria in the making of whatever decisions ? How come that an energy sector industry is saving on qualified engineers for the design of such an important system ?.

You, my friend, should be an apprentice, tutored by an experienced engineer, you should not be making any transcendental projects without even knowing "what's the software".

No wander why we have spills, fires, explosions, accidental releases, etc.

There have been a few post here on the hazards of fracking. Comments on both sides of the coin. This post makes me wonder if the comments against fracking have more justification. Would you place you water supply in his hands?

"Would you place you water supply in his hands?"

NO, and I wouldn't place his hands in my water supply, either.

It must still be the way it was in the 1980's when I was in gas well analysis. I ran a computerized wireline truck with various tools to determine the porosity and hydrocarbon content of a suspected reservoir rock formation and after casing was set, we also returned to determine if the cement was bonded to the casing, and perforate the pipe to allow fracking of the reservoir formation. Back then, the training was 6 weeks long and all in a class room. This covered about 1/2 of the tools you might be expected to run. Definitely NOT the cased hole services such as pipe bonding and perforation. Once in the field, the district supervisor assumed you were trained on EVEYTHING he might expect you to run for a customer. The one thing you NEVER wanted to do was act as though you had no idea how to run a given service for the customer, or you were then stuck into the worst job he could find for you to do, or in a cycle of jobs for days on end. I ran many a well service on cased holes by figuring out what to do on the well site. (ever wonder why the cement job on the Deep Water Horizon was not bonded correctly? Maybe a green engineer for the wireline service company???)

Actually Anonymous, it's a dumb question!

You cannot generate power via software..you can only control hardware via software.

Consider what type of power-generating plant you have (eg GE, etc..) ; you need to conform/ remain compatible with that (manufacturers specified software). Lets face it, you can't run a gas turbine on MsWord, neither can you run the alternator/ generator on some free download software...wake up. Why are they giving this task to a trainee ?

This is major engineering which will require a team to implement. Contact your equipment supplier for more info...

Hey there,

As many people said here, ask what software your company uses, because it doesnt make sense to get an unlicensed version online and than have problems. A license for any mayor power systems analysis software is quite high, so be clear on what it is you can have access to. My guess is that depending where you are in the world you will be using either: Powerfactory (DIgSILENT), PSS/E (Siemens), PSLF (GE) or ETAP.

All of these software need considerable training and time to really learn. It will really depend on what you want to do and analyze, but you will need access to a LOT of data to simulate a system (generator data, cables, transformers, loads, etc).

It seems to me you just want to know whats out there and how you can contribute with your company, but if you really are curious ask a senior engineer there.

Take my advice here: if you want to go down the simulation path, get a position in a department that takes care of that, the way will be way faster and smoother, and you will have the chance to do something that matters (need to keep motivation).

Regards,

Freddy Alcazar

For your purposes you can use SimCity.

Hi everyone!

Based one my opinion, a faster way to swiftly learn how to design and operate electrical power system of industrial facilities as well as oil and gas manufacturers is to utilize power system analysis software (PSA). There are several analyzing software existing, but I want to introduce PSA-Outline software to you. You can explore it on the website: www.psa-outilne.com or see its demos here http://www.psa-outline.com/category/training-on-videos/

Good luck!
