Underground Cable Break Finder

10/27/2014 10:31 AM

IS there any cheapest meter (tools) available to find the cable break in underground cable?

Time Domain Reflectometer? OK, it's not cheap.

Cheap is easy if you are lucky - we used to find breaks in spools of 15000' multiconductor armored wireline because we knew when a conductor broke, (in our case - most likely abraded) it would also be grounded to the cable armor. A reading of resistance from each end made it quite a simple ratio solution to find how far down the line the bad spot was. You may not be as lucky and if you are concerned about only one of several conductors, the conductor may be opened, but not shorted to ground.

Google your title.

Very simple. Try it.

I did.

Let's give muthuk10 a little credit.

On second thought no, let's not.

I bet he'll click and not type.

If you have access to an oscilloscope and a pulse generator, you can "roll your own" time domain reflectometer. If you can see the send and reflected pulse on the same sweep, you can calculate the distance. Light travels about 1000 ft per microsecond (500 ft down and back). (Transmission in a cable would be a bit slower, maybe about 400 ft down and back.) It works best if the far end is either open or shorted so you have an impedance discontinuity at the fault. Of course, the width of your pulse needs to be short enough to see the return pulse but wide enough to supply as much energy as possible.

Long ago, I located a break in a phone line this way. Lo and behold, where I had calculated, I found "some guys digging". (Maybe I was just lucky.)

Great idea! Seems like that feature would be easy to add to a scope.

You can try Cable fault locator based on Pulse reflection and intelligent bridge testing method with full-automatic and manual testing functions .

The machine is not prohibitively costly and can be used when ends of the cable are terminated in a ground level terminal box .

You have described a Time Domain Reflectometer, see post #2.

Re: Underground Cable Break Finder

Many years ago I and two friends used a signal generator to find a cable break. We tuned an old fashioned transistor radio to "hear" the signal generator signal and sent the signal down the broken line.

We used a single small value capacitor to insulate the cable from the signal generator, I don't remember the exact technical reason why anymore, there was no power on the cable!

It certainly wasn't FM as the portable transistor radios around then had mostly no FM! Just medium and long wave.

Luckily we knew pretty much where the cable ran.

We extended the aerial and walked the cable till the signal started to fade. We dug there and found we were within a couple of feet of the break.

I don't remember for certain what that was for a cable type, probably mains. The problem was a badly made connector....the electrical team had to cut it out and add a few yards of cable with two new connectors....

Its at least 40 if not 50 years ago......further details I have simply forgotten....

I hope that helps....

I just looked on the web and I found a YouTube video, basically doing the same, but he already had a signal on his wire from the transmitter. you will need to do this in some other way like we did....

There are several other videos that I did not look at that appear to do basically the same, so its nothing new (as I thought!):-

I think my version is not only the cheapest method, but probably the easiest as well.

If a signal generator is not available, a simple oscillator might be constructed, with a variable component, to allow for "tuning" away from local radio stations, in the medium wave band...

I have to admit up front that I have never done it myself that way, as even at school I had access to signal generators! Valve (Tube) ones then of course!!! But they were REALLY expensive then as well, thousands of UK pounds I believe!

If you look here you will see many DIY schematics for signal generation, maybe one could be adapted, then pick one with a strong signal output:-

Have you considered a Wheatstone bridge circuit.

You can build your own and they can be surprisingly accurate at finding break and short locations in very long circuit runs.

Google it and I am sure you will get more information

I was in the gravel driveway of a new construction when I noticed steam coming out of the ground in one spot. It turned out to be the damaged underground power feed to the building (Electric heating the primary load).

With that in mind, you get connect both ends of the damaged cable to a welder, crank it up and look for steam.

It will be a destructive test and damage remaining good part of the cable

If there is water and an escape hole. I once saw a big hole made by such a fault! It threw a ton of concrete around at Pitney Bowes car park in Harlow, UK.
