12/13/2014 4:41 PM

It may not set the sensors off. I friend that travels extensively just had a titanium insert to repair his collar bone. Says no probs at the airports around the world.

Yes, a high-tech solution but do you think we could come up with a better way of holding in in place? Perhaps some sort of hat?

Oh, wait, now I get it.

Why is it on a wire mesh? Does not seem safe to needles and nails.

Fredski-

Sorry about the length of this but I think it can help you. If you have questions or comments send a CR4 private message to me.

I can set the alarm off but it usually depends upon the airport and whether you are using an airport provided wheel chair. If it is in a less frequently implanted area of the body it also is more likely to set off the fixed and the hand wand detectors. One thing to do to help you is to get a card with a small picture of a x-ray of the application and a picture of the material implanted. The cards and pictures help a lot if the TSA agent is not familiar with these things. If they take an unusual length of time just ask for a supervisor, if necessary.

Due to football and a couple of ridiculous other things, I have an artificial knee (stainless), staples and other things in my chest and a junk yard in my foot. Generally they just ask what it is and reconfirm it with the wand. Hardest place to get through was Albuquerque, NM. Because of the knee they made me go into a separate room where they made me drop trou. They relooked at the card, checked the scars, used the hand wand and thanked me for my cooperation. Generally any proof provided by the manufacturer is much better for you (pacemakers, joints, hardware, bone splices, etc). Ask your dr. about that.

Most places are very accommodative. You are not special to them. There are many others like you us who have to do it when traveling. Stay healthier.

Don't get upset or pi$$ed off at them, it only makes it harder. They are just doing their job and don't want to get into trouble with the boss or have an incident.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Here is a picture of the card that I carry for my st. stl knee.On the left is a picture of the device. On the right is a picture of an x-ray of the device in a typical installation.

Please pardon the frayed edge on the left. It is worn on there.I recommend this sort of description card for any metallic implant such as:knees; hips; shoulders; elbows; pacemakers; defibs; skull patches; metal hardware for broken bones; staples from open heart surgeries, etc.It has made things much easier for me when travelling where there are TSA agents.
Good Luck, Old Salt

Well I hope you really like heavy metal music, because they can now call you a metal head and mean it. Hope you get well soon. I am going in for C7-T1 back and right shoulder surgery in a few weeks. Nothing like getting them both done at once. Just bought a new bell for after surgery, wife might take a hammer to it before I fully recover Duke P.S.Hope you get felling better soon.

there are several types available. I think the pattern adds stiffness. I lost about half my upper skull in a battle I had with the Reaper last June. going around with no protection for months makes one paranoid. I'm resting easier now regardless of the pattern beneath my scalp thats holding all my skull together

Wow, amazing progress!! When I was a kid, maybe 45 years ago. my Dad was injured. He worked on an oil well, roughnecks they were called. One day a hook and pulley on a chain came loose and hit him square in the forehead. My sister still has the severely dented metal hard hat.

Remember we had to drive hours to the hospital wondering if he would survive. He came out OK and had a solid metal plate in his forehead to cover the hole left behind. It had to be bigger than a silver dollar. Good thing he never had to endure TSA.

Glad to hear your on the mend. Old Salt's mention of the photos is a good one. I had a junkyard in my left ankle after a motorcycle accident, and carried the photos for a while myself.

Be glad it's a mesh, if it was solid, you might become a thick-skulled AP!

I'm curious...will this mesh provide a matrix for new bone growth?

and

How do you feel about helmets now?

Technology is amazing!

I'm going through something right now that would have cost me my leg or my life 100 years ago.

no bone regrowth, its a perm replacement for loss of bone due to a staph infection that had a party in my head, the bone couldn't be salvaged. the rest of my skull was infected to a lessor degree and week after week of penicillin pumped directly into my heart (24 million units/day finally whipped it after 6 weeks. my doctors wanted to wait 6 months to make sure it wouldn't come back. all my CT'S and blood tests were good so I had brain surgery #5 last week., my head looks like a railroad map!

Damn!

I burned my leg over Thanksgiving, and hating doctor visits, attempted to self treat.

Did good for awhile, but now infection has my leg and kneecap swelled up like a softball.

Glad you're doing okay. I can live without a brain...toasted that in the late 70s.

Fredski-

Been trying to post a picture of the card for my knee but what used to work with posting a jpg isn't working now for me. If anyone can assist me and have them post what to do right it would be greatly appreciated. You and others may be interested in what they are like. I think it would probably be of value to you.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and "less exciting" health in the future.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Best of luck on your road to recovery.

I have quite a bit of metal in my body from my colorful past and used to have issues at all airports but lately there have been several major airports that have new equipment where I do not have any issues.

I always make sure the TSA folks know before I enter the scanning area and normally they have me step aside into the personal & friendly area if they do not have the latest equipment.

Three things that helped me regain the strength in the fingers left on my left hand quickly back in 1995 after my accident was:

Playing an acoustic guitar.

Gripping exercises with a Wilson "Super-Grip" compression ball. (green)

Wrist exercises with a Wilson Wrist Developer.

I am certain you will succeed in getting back on the road in a very short time.

May the wind cool your brow and the sun never set on a bad day.

Fredski-

Hope your recovery is fast and without disappointments. Was once told that if you are dwelling on yesterday and worry about tomorrow, you are pi$$ing on today. You certainly don't seem to be worrying about tomorrow, keep it up.

Whenever I get in a down feeling I think of the words at the bottom of all my postings: "Any day on the green side of the grass is a great day". It's very true and keeps me aligned on tomorrow. This has helped me through some very rough things, especially being dead for 6 minutes. YOU ARE A GREAT GUY! Keep the mind on the green grass and you will be around a long time to see it.

Good Luck, Old Salt

thank you for the kind words. 2 years ago I had an aneurysm blow in my head, I was in a coma over a month and later found out my doctors had suggested to my family that after going code blue twice, ( my breathing quit) to pull the plug on my ventilator.the road to recovery is never fast enough. I was a gym-rat for over 15 years and was a professional wrestler in my mid 30's. I apply the same work ethic to rehab that I use to apply to my vanity. I have more surgeries in Feb that should get me vertical again. I'm often asked, "how do you do it"? (asking how I stay so positive). the answer is simple, "the alternative sucks". I'm not going to add them all up but I've been told by more than one doctor that I'd never do so many things, most of them are currently looking for good recipies for crow
