Turbine Overspeed

02/19/2015 11:32 PM

What are all the conditions to cause the turbine overspeed in thermal powerplant??

No need to know them all.

You only need to know the cause of your turbine over-speed condition.

I'll start.

1. Poor, or no, maintenance.

You take the next one.

2.

Sudden loss of load might be high on the list, followed by governor adjustments and/or malfunctions.

Lack of operator training is number one on my list

All of them together or separately that occur when the turbine over-speeds.

Assume weather condition are on the very bottom of the list.

Which ones did you find?

It depends a lot on the type of turbine, some such as the impulse (Brown-Curtis) type tend to be more prone to overspeed problems than reactionary types.

In many instances, overspeed is more damaging to the generator than to the turbine, mainly due to rotational mass, they can throw windings and destroy bearings causing a rotor lockup and possible shaft breakage - from that point the turbine is totally unloaded and can easily overspeed.

Other rapid rates of change of loading can lead to overspeed if the governor control is not sufficiently sensitive to prevent it. For example, an open circuit can create a drop in load from maximum to zero in a fraction of a second, this loss of load can easily result in very high overspeed.

Poor choice of components both original and replacement can lead to failure and consequent over speed.

Loss of communication between the turbine speed sensors and the control equipment can be another contributor.

Excess steam flow through the turbine either as a result of boiler overpressure or failure of the turbine control valves to regulate correctly (failure of hydraulic pump, blockage of oil lines, dirty steam, poor maintenance of inlet valves, etc.) can result in overspeed. Typically, turbine overspeed trips need to operate at around 110% of full speed and shut off the steam within a second or two.

Excess vacuum on the turbine outlet can increase steam velocity and turbine speed, failure or non existence of vacuum breakers in condensing boilers can result in secondary overspeed during an initial trip.

The major cause of turbine overspeed is human error, this is evidenced by the fact that a great number of events occur during routine testing where safety controls have been bypassed.

Hmm....I just realised that I am likely doing this guy's homework for him..

I will try to be more circumspect in future.

Yep, i was going to put out a homework alert on this thread after seeing the OP's post about "reverse power protection" but got pulled away before I got the word out.

The wording kind of tends to give it away...

Ha! The OP claims to be a "power engineer"! I think I hurt he's feelers on his" reverse power protection " thread He was very curt to me

Is there anyway this could be programmed and automated.?

Homework?

I'm sure the hapless students who come here asking us to do it for them would like for it to be automated.

Please note that I did not call them lazy or selfish or childish.

Facial Icon pattern recognition.

Back to the OP: the turbine is having overspeed issue because when 86 took it out of load, the overspeed trip didn't work. You do have an 86 relay don't you?

They will be listed in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the equipment, under the title "Troubleshooting". The document cannot be seen from here.

This depends on:

  1. Dervishes wearing turbans.
  2. Dervishes are permitted access to thermal power plants.
